🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain, Fill, and Level Check
Your Explorer uses a sealed automatic transmission with no dipstick, so the fluid level must be set with the vehicle level and the transmission at the correct temperature. This service is usually a drain-and-fill, not a full flush, unless a machine exchange is specifically requested.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface. The vehicle must stay level for the final fluid check.
- Transmission fluid gets hot. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
- Use jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Keep dirt out of the transmission. Clean around all plugs before opening them.
- No battery disconnect is needed for this service.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the transmission cool enough to handle safely, but the final level check must be done warm.
- Raise and support the Explorer evenly so it stays level.
- Have the new fluid ready before you open the fill plug.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to raise the Explorer.
- Place the vehicle on jack stands at the proper support points.
- Use wheel chocks on the opposite end if needed.
- Make sure the vehicle sits level front-to-rear and side-to-side.
Step 2: Remove the underbody shield
- Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the fasteners from the splash shield or undertray.
- Set the panel and hardware aside in order.
Step 3: Loosen the fill plug first
- Use the 10mm socket or the correct plug tool for the transmission fill plug.
- Loosen it before draining anything so you know it will come out later.
- Never drain first if the fill plug is stuck.
Step 4: Drain the old fluid
- Place the drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
- Use the correct socket to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely into a measuring container.
- Measure how much came out. You will refill close to that amount first.
- Install a new drain plug seal if equipped.
Step 5: Replace the filter and pan gasket
- Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the transmission pan bolts.
- Lower the pan carefully and pour out any remaining fluid.
- Remove the old filter. A little fluid may spill, so keep the drain pan underneath.
- Install the new transmission filter.
- Clean the pan mating surface with shop towels.
- Install the new transmission pan gasket.
Step 6: Reinstall the pan
- Lift the pan into place by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first.
- Use the torque wrench and 8mm socket to tighten the pan bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Refill with Mercon LV fluid
- Use a fluid pump or long funnel to add fresh Automatic transmission fluid, Mercon LV through the fill port.
- Refill with about the same amount you drained out to start.
- Install the fill plug loosely for now.
Step 8: Warm the transmission and set the level
- Start the engine and hold the brake pedal.
- Move the shifter slowly through all gear positions, pausing a few seconds in each one.
- Return to Park.
- Use a scan tool or infrared thermometer to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
- When the fluid reaches the correct checking range, remove the fill/check plug.
- Add fluid with the fluid pump until a thin stream just begins to dribble out.
- Install the fill plug with a new fill plug seal.
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the shield and lower the vehicle
- Reinstall the underbody shield with the 8mm socket.
- Lower the Explorer carefully from the jack stands.
Step 10: Final check
- With the engine running, check underneath for leaks.
- Drive a short loop and verify normal shifting.
- Recheck for leaks after the test drive.
✅ After Repair
- Shifts should feel smooth and consistent.
- If you see slipping, harsh shifts, or a warning light, recheck the fluid level.
- If you replaced the filter and pan gasket, inspect again after a few days for seepage.
