This job replaces the automatic transmission fluid in your Expedition’s 10-speed automatic transmission. The fluid helps cool, lubricate, and protect the transmission, and the fill level must be set at the correct fluid temperature.

• ⚠️ Transmission fluid can burn you. Let the exhaust and transmission cool before removing the pan or fill plug.
• ⚠️ Your Expedition must stay level while raised. Use four jack stands or a lift; never rely on a jack alone.
• ⚠️ This 10-speed transmission uses a temperature-based fill procedure. Too much or too little fluid can cause shifting problems.
• ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the transmission. Even small debris can damage internal valves.
• ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for a basic fluid and pan/filter service.

📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your Expedition on a flat, level surface.
• 🛑 Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the wheels.
• 🌡️ A scan tool is needed because the final level is checked by transmission fluid temperature, also called TFT.
• 🧰 A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump used to push new fluid into the transmission through the fill opening.
• 📌 Assumption: this is a pan drop and filter service, not a full machine flush.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Level the Vehicle

• Use wheel chocks to secure the wheels before lifting.
• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Expedition.
• Place it securely on jack stands rated 3-ton minimum at all four corners so it sits level.
• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Level vehicle means accurate fluid level.

Step 2: Remove the Underbody Shield if Equipped

• Use an 8mm socket, 10mm socket, or 13mm socket as needed to remove the underbody shield fasteners.
• Use a flat trim tool to release any plastic retainers carefully.
• Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Locate the Transmission Pan and Fill/Level Plug

• Place a drain pan rated 12-quart minimum under the transmission pan.
• Locate the fill/level plug on the transmission case before removing the pan.
• Use the correct socket from your listed tools to gently verify the fill/level plug will loosen.
• Do not remove the pan until you know the fill plug can be opened.
• Never drain what you cannot refill.

Step 4: Remove the Transmission Pan

• Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to loosen the transmission pan bolts.
• Loosen the bolts evenly, starting at the rear and sides.
• Leave a couple bolts loosely installed at one end so the pan can tilt and drain slowly.
• Let the fluid drain into the 12-quart drain pan.
• Remove the remaining bolts with the 10mm socket and lower the pan carefully.

Step 5: Remove the Old Filter

• Pull the transmission filter straight down by hand.
• If it is stuck, gently work it loose by hand only. Do not pry against the valve body.
• The valve body is the aluminum hydraulic control assembly inside the transmission.
• Make sure the old filter seal comes out with the filter.

Step 6: Clean the Pan and Magnet

• Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean the inside of the pan.
• Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean old gasket material from the pan sealing surface.
• Clean the pan magnet and reinstall it in the same position.
• Do not use sandpaper or metal scrapers on sealing surfaces.

Step 7: Install the New Filter

• Lightly coat the new filter seal with fresh MERCON ULV automatic transmission fluid.
• Push the new transmission filter straight into place by hand.
• Make sure it is fully seated and level.

Step 8: Reinstall the Transmission Pan

• Position the new transmission pan gasket on the cleaned pan.
• Install the pan by hand with the transmission pan bolts.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
• Use a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the pan bolts evenly to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
• Do not overtighten. The pan gasket can crush and leak.

Step 9: Add Initial Transmission Fluid

• Remove the fill/level plug using the correct socket from your listed tools.
• Install the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the fill opening.
• Pump in MERCON ULV automatic transmission fluid until fluid begins to run back out of the fill/level opening.
• Temporarily reinstall the fill/level plug by hand.

Step 10: Warm the Transmission and Cycle the Gears

• Connect the OBD-II scan tool with transmission fluid temperature data.
• Start the engine with your foot on the brake.
• Move the shifter slowly through Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and back to Park.
• Pause 3 seconds in each position.
• Keep the engine idling during the fluid level check.

Step 11: Set the Final Fluid Level

• Use the OBD-II scan tool with transmission fluid temperature data to monitor TFT.
• When fluid temperature is in the normal level-check range, remove the fill/level plug with the correct socket.
• If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump to add MERCON ULV automatic transmission fluid until a thin stream runs out.
• When the stream slows to a light drip, the level is set.
• Use an infrared thermometer only as a backup check at the pan; the scan tool reading is preferred.

Step 12: Reinstall the Fill/Level Plug

• Install a new transmission fill/level plug seal if removed or damaged.
• Reinstall the fill/level plug using the correct socket.
• Use a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the plug to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
• Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 13: Reinstall the Underbody Shield

• Raise the underbody shield into place.
• Use the 8mm socket, 10mm socket, or 13mm socket to reinstall the fasteners removed earlier.
• Tighten plastic and shield fasteners snug only.

Step 14: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower your Expedition slowly to the ground.
• Remove the wheel chocks.

• ✅ Start the engine and check underneath for leaks.
• ✅ Test drive gently for 10-15 minutes. Confirm smooth engagement in Drive and Reverse.
• ✅ Recheck for leaks around the transmission pan and fill/level plug.
• ✅ If shifting feels harsh, delayed, or the transmission slips, stop driving and recheck the fluid level using the scan-tool temperature method.
• ♻️ Recycle the used transmission fluid at an approved fluid recycling center.
