📋 Before You Begin
- Park your F-150 on level ground and let the transmission cool until it is safe to touch.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- A scan tool is needed to read transmission fluid temperature. A scan tool is an electronic tool that reads live vehicle data from the diagnostic port.
- The final fluid level must be checked with the engine running and the transmission fluid temperature in the specified range: 96-101°F.
- This transmission does not use a traditional engine-bay dipstick. Fluid is added and checked from underneath the truck.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and Support the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise your F-150 at approved frame lift points.
- Place the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame so the truck sits level front-to-rear and side-to-side.
- Use wheel chocks to keep the truck from rolling.
- Gently shake the truck by hand to make sure it is stable before going underneath.
Step 2: Remove the Front Underbody Shield if Equipped
- Use the 8mm socket, 10mm socket, and trim clip remover to remove the underbody shield fasteners.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
- Tip: Take a photo first.
Step 3: Locate the Transmission Pan and Fill Plug
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt from around the transmission pan and fill plug area.
- The transmission pan is the large pan at the bottom of the transmission. The fill/check plug is on the transmission case area and is accessed from underneath.
Step 4: Loosen the Fill Plug First
- Use the correct socket from your 3/8-inch ratchet set to carefully loosen the fill plug before draining fluid.
- This is important because you must know the fill plug can be opened before removing the pan.
- If the fill plug will not loosen, stop and do not drain the transmission.
Step 5: Drain the Transmission Fluid
- Place the drain pan 12-quart minimum under the transmission pan.
- Use the 10mm socket, 13mm socket, ratchet 3/8-inch drive, and long extension 3/8-inch drive to loosen the transmission pan bolts gradually.
- Start at one corner and loosen the bolts slowly so the pan tilts and drains into the drain pan.
- Keep your face and arms away from the fluid path.
- Once most fluid has drained, remove the remaining pan bolts and lower the pan carefully.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pan and Filter Assembly
- Use the 10mm socket or 13mm socket as needed to remove any remaining pan fasteners.
- Lower the old pan/filter assembly straight down to avoid spilling fluid.
- Inspect the old fluid. Dark fluid is common. Heavy metal chunks or burnt smell may indicate internal transmission wear.
Step 7: Clean the Mating Surface
- Use the plastic scraper to gently clean the transmission case sealing surface.
- Use brake cleaner aerosol on a clean shop towel to wipe the surface clean.
- Do not gouge the aluminum surface. Scratches can cause leaks.
- Tip: Plastic scraper only.
Step 8: Install the New Pan and Gasket
- Place the transmission pan gasket onto the new automatic transmission fluid pan with integrated filter.
- Raise the new pan into position by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket, 13mm socket, and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to snug the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the pan bolts evenly. Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 9: Add Initial Transmission Fluid
- Use the fluid transfer pump to pump MERCON ULV automatic transmission fluid into the fill opening.
- Add fluid slowly until it begins to trickle from the fill/check opening.
- Install the fill plug finger-tight for now using the matching socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive.
Step 10: Warm the Transmission and Circulate Fluid
- Connect the scan tool with transmission temperature data to the diagnostic port under the dashboard.
- Start the engine while the truck remains safely supported and level.
- With your foot firmly on the brake, move the shifter slowly through each gear position, pausing 3 seconds in each position.
- Return the shifter to Park and leave the engine running.
- Watch transmission fluid temperature on the scan tool until it reaches 96-101°F.
Step 11: Set the Final Fluid Level
- With the engine running, use the appropriate socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the fill/check plug.
- If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump to add MERCON ULV automatic transmission fluid until a thin stream begins to flow from the fill/check opening.
- If a heavy stream comes out, let it drain until it becomes a thin drip.
- The correct level is reached when fluid drips lightly from the opening at 96-101°F.
- Use the infrared thermometer only as a backup temperature check at the pan. The scan tool reading is the preferred method.
Step 12: Tighten the Fill Plug
- Install the new transmission fill plug seal if equipped.
- Use the correct socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the fill plug. Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean with a clean shop towel.
Step 13: Reinstall the Underbody Shield
- Use the 8mm socket, 10mm socket, and trim clip remover to reinstall the shield and clips.
- Make sure the shield sits flat and does not touch the exhaust or driveshaft.
Step 14: Lower the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your F-150 slowly and remove the wheel chocks.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and check under your F-150 for leaks around the transmission pan and fill plug.
- Road test gently for 10-15 minutes. Confirm smooth shifts and no warning lights.
- Recheck for leaks after the road test.
- Dispose of old transmission fluid properly at a recycling center or auto parts store. Do not pour it on the ground or into drains.
- If shifting feels harsh, delayed, or a transmission warning appears, stop driving and scan for transmission codes.
