Your 1500 uses a sealed ZF-style 8-speed automatic transmission, so the fluid level must be set from underneath the truck at a specific fluid temperature while the engine is running.

• 🅿️ Park your 1500 on a flat, level surface.
• 🧱 Chock the wheels with wheel chocks before lifting.
• 🛻 Raise and support the truck level at all four corners using a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum and jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• 📟 Connect an OBD2 scan tool with transmission temperature live data. Transmission fluid temperature must be monitored during final fill.
• 📌 A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that pushes fresh fluid up into the side fill port because this transmission has no dipstick tube.
• 📌 The transmission pan includes the filter, so the pan and filter are serviced together.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and Level the Truck

• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise your 1500.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame at all four corners.
• Use a small level on the frame rail if available to confirm the truck sits level front-to-rear and side-to-side.
• Level truck equals correct fill.

Step 2: Remove the Underbody Shield if Equipped

• Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the transmission belly pan or splash shield fasteners if equipped.
• Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Locate the Transmission Fill Plug

• Find the fill plug on the side of the transmission case.
• Before draining fluid, use the correct socket from your plug style with a ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to verify the fill plug can be loosened.
• If the fill plug will not loosen, stop. Do not drain the transmission until the fill plug can be removed.

Step 4: Place the Drain Pan

• Position a drain pan 10-quart minimum under the transmission pan.
• Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves before loosening pan bolts.

Step 5: Drain the Transmission Fluid

• If your pan has a drain plug, use the correct socket from your pan style with a ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove it and drain the fluid.
• If your pan does not have a drain plug, use a 10mm socket to loosen the rear and side pan bolts first.
• Leave a few front bolts threaded in loosely so the pan tilts down slowly and drains into the drain pan.
• Once most fluid drains out, remove the remaining bolts with the 10mm socket.
• Slow pan tilt prevents a fluid bath.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pan and Filter Assembly

• Support the pan with one hand while removing the last bolts using a 10mm socket.
• Lower the pan straight down carefully because it will still contain fluid.
• Pour the remaining fluid into the drain pan.

Step 7: Clean the Transmission Mating Surface

• Use a plastic scraper to gently remove any gasket material from the transmission case surface.
• Use brake cleaner aerosol on a shop towel to wipe the mating surface clean.
• Do not spray brake cleaner directly into the open transmission.
• Do not use a metal scraper. It can gouge the aluminum sealing surface.

Step 8: Install the New Pan and Gasket

• Place the new automatic transmission pan gasket onto the new pan if it is not pre-installed.
• Raise the new automatic transmission pan with integrated filter into position by hand.
• Start all pan bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
• Use a 10mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
• Use a torque wrench 1/4-inch drive inch-pound to tighten pan bolts evenly to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 9: Initial Fill

• Remove the fill plug fully using the correct socket from your plug style with a ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive.
• Install the fluid transfer pump hose into the fill port.
• Pump Mopar 8&9-speed automatic transmission fluid into the transmission until fluid begins to trickle out of the fill port.
• Temporarily install the fill plug finger-tight.

Step 10: Start the Engine and Cycle the Gears

• Start the engine with your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
• Use the shifter to move slowly through Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive.
• Pause 3 seconds in each position, then return to Park.
• Leave the engine idling for the final level check.

Step 11: Monitor Transmission Fluid Temperature

• Use the OBD2 scan tool with transmission temperature live data to watch the transmission fluid temperature.
• The final level is normally checked with fluid temperature around 30-50°C (86-122°F).
• Do not finish the level check if the fluid is too cold or too hot.

Step 12: Set Final Fluid Level

• With the engine idling, transmission in Park, truck level, and temperature in range, remove the fill plug using the correct socket from your plug style.
• Use the fluid transfer pump to add Mopar 8&9-speed automatic transmission fluid until a thin stream flows from the fill port.
• Wait until the stream becomes a light drip.
• Install the new transmission fill plug seal.
• Install the fill plug and tighten with a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Reinstall the Underbody Shield

• Shut the engine off.
• Use shop towels to wipe spilled fluid from the transmission and exhaust area.
• Reinstall the belly pan or splash shield using an 8mm socket or 10mm socket.
• Tighten small shield fasteners snugly. Do not over-tighten plastic or thin metal shields.

Step 14: Lower the Truck

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower your 1500 slowly to the ground.
