📋 Before You Begin

• Park your CX-5 on a flat, level surface.
• Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• Let the engine and transmission cool until they are safe to touch.
• Use only Mazda ATF FZ fluid. Other fluids can cause harsh shifting or transmission damage.
• An OBD2 scan tool with live data reads the transmission fluid temperature from the vehicle computer. This is the most accurate way to set fluid level.
• If your scan tool cannot read transmission fluid temperature, use an infrared thermometer on the transmission pan as a backup, but live data is preferred.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Level the CX-5

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your CX-5 at the approved front jacking point.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved support points.
• If needed, raise the rear as well so the CX-5 sits level front-to-back and side-to-side.
• Use wheel chocks to keep the vehicle from moving.
• Level vehicle equals correct fluid level.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Use the 8mm socket, 10mm socket, and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the underbody splash shield fasteners.
• Set the splash shield and fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same locations.

Step 3: Find the Transmission Fill Port First

• Use a fender cover to protect the painted body panels.
• Locate the automatic transmission fill cap/dipstick area from the engine bay side.
• Make sure the fill port can be opened before removing any fluid below.
• This is important because you do not want to drain fluid and then discover you cannot refill it.

Step 4: Place the Drain Pan

• Place the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the transmission level/check plug area.
• Keep shop towels nearby because ATF spreads quickly and is slippery.

Step 5: Remove the Transmission Level Check Plug

• Use the correct size from your Allen hex socket set metric with the ratchet 3/8-inch drive to loosen the transmission level check plug.
• Remove the plug slowly and let the old ATF drain into the pan.
• Measure the amount removed using the measuring container marked in quarts.
• Expect roughly 3-4 quarts during a normal drain-and-fill, but the exact amount can vary.
• Measure what came out.

Step 6: Reinstall the Level Check Plug Temporarily

• Install a new transmission level plug sealing washer on the plug.
• Thread the plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the plug starts crooked and damages the threads.
• Use the Allen hex socket set metric and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to snug it lightly for now.
• Final torque will be done after the fluid level is checked.

Step 7: Add Fresh Mazda ATF FZ

• Use the fluid transfer pump to add fresh Mazda ATF FZ automatic transmission fluid through the fill port.
• Add the same amount you drained out, then add about 0.25 quart extra to prepare for the level check.
• Reinstall the fill cap/dipstick temporarily by hand.
• Only use ATF FZ fluid.

Step 8: Warm the Transmission Fluid

• Connect the OBD2 scan tool with live data to the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
• Start the engine while the CX-5 is safely supported and level.
• With your foot firmly on the brake, move the shifter slowly through P, R, N, D, and back to P.
• Pause 3 seconds in each gear position to fill the internal passages with fluid.
• Watch the transmission fluid temperature on the OBD2 scan tool with live data.
• If using the backup method, aim the infrared thermometer at the transmission pan, but remember this is less accurate than scan data.

Step 9: Set the Final Fluid Level

• Keep the engine idling and the shifter in Park.
• When transmission fluid temperature is around normal level-check range, use the Allen hex socket set metric and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to carefully remove the level check plug.
• A small stream should flow out, then slow to a drip.
• If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump to add Mazda ATF FZ through the fill port until fluid begins to run from the level check hole.
• When the flow slows to a thin drip, the level is set.
• Install the level check plug with the new washer.
• Use the Allen hex socket set metric and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the plug to Torque to 30-40 Nm (22-30 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the Fill Cap and Splash Shield

• Install a new transmission fill plug sealing washer if the fill design uses a sealing washer.
• Reinstall the fill cap/dipstick fully by hand.
• Use shop towels to clean any spilled ATF from the transmission case and underbody.
• Use the 8mm socket, 10mm socket, and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to reinstall the lower splash shield.
• Tighten small splash shield fasteners snug only; do not overtighten plastic clips or small bolts.

Step 11: Lower the CX-5

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower the CX-5 slowly and carefully to the ground.
• Remove the wheel chocks.

• Start the engine and check underneath for leaks while the CX-5 is idling.
• Drive gently for 10-15 minutes and make sure shifts feel smooth.
• Recheck for leaks around the level check plug and fill area after the test drive.
