🔧 1500 - Transmission Fluid & Filter Service
This service replaces the automatic transmission fluid and the integrated filter pan on your 1500. The 8-speed automatic transmission does not use a traditional dipstick, so the fluid level must be checked at the correct transmission temperature using a scan tool.

- ⚠️ The transmission fluid level is temperature-sensitive; checking it too cold or too hot can cause shifting problems.
- ⚠️ Your 1500 uses an eTorque mild-hybrid system. Do not touch any orange high-voltage wiring or components.
- ⚠️ Keep the truck level while filling and checking the fluid. A tilted truck will give a wrong fluid level.
- ⚠️ Transmission fluid can be very hot. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ⚠️ Use only fluid approved for the ZF 8-speed transmission. The wrong fluid can damage the transmission.
- ⚠️ Do not disconnect the 48V mild-hybrid battery for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your 1500 on a flat, level surface.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the exhaust and transmission cool before working underneath.
- Raise the truck with a floor jack and support it securely with jack stands.
- Make sure the truck sits level front-to-rear and side-to-side on the stands.
- Connect a scan tool with transmission temperature data. A scan tool reads live temperature from the transmission computer.
- The final fluid check must be done with transmission fluid temperature around 30-50°C / 86-122°F.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Truck
- Use a floor jack to lift your 1500 at approved frame lift points.
- Place jack stands under the frame rails.
- Gently lower the truck onto the jack stands.
- Shake the truck lightly by hand to make sure it is stable before going underneath.
- Never trust a jack alone.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Shield If Equipped
- Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to remove the lower shield fasteners if your 1500 has an underbody shield.
- Use a trim clip remover to release any plastic push clips.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
Step 3: Locate the Fill Plug First
- Find the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission case.
- Use the correct-size socket from your metric socket set to loosen the fill plug before draining the fluid.
- This is important because you do not want to drain the transmission and then discover the fill plug is stuck.
- Do not fully remove the plug yet.
Step 4: Drain the Transmission Fluid
- Place a 10-quart drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Use the correct-size socket from your metric socket set to remove the transmission drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
- Inspect the drained fluid. Dark fluid is common; metal chunks or heavy glitter is not normal.
Step 5: Remove the Transmission Filter Pan
- Use an 8mm socket or the correct-size socket from your metric socket set to remove the transmission pan bolts.
- Support the pan with one hand while removing the last few bolts.
- Lower the pan carefully because fluid will still be inside.
- The filter is built into the pan. Replace the complete pan assembly.
Step 6: Clean the Mating Surface
- Use a plastic scraper to gently clean the transmission case sealing surface.
- Use shop towels and brake cleaner to remove old fluid from the area.
- Do not gouge the aluminum surface.
- Do not use metal scrapers or power sanding discs.
Step 7: Install the New Filter Pan
- Position the new automatic transmission filter pan with gasket against the transmission.
- Install the new transmission pan bolts by hand first so they do not cross-thread.
- Use an 8mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the pan bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Install the drain plug with a new seal using the correct socket from your metric socket set.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs), unless the replacement pan manufacturer specifies otherwise.
Step 8: Add Initial Fluid
- Remove the fill plug using the correct socket from your metric socket set.
- Use a fluid transfer pump to pump approved ZF 8-speed automatic transmission fluid into the fill hole.
- A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that pushes fluid upward into the side fill port.
- Fill until fluid just begins to trickle out of the fill hole.
- Install the fill plug finger-tight only.
Step 9: Start the Engine and Cycle the Gears
- Keep the truck level on jack stands.
- Start the engine while keeping your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
- Use the gear selector to move slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing about 3 seconds in each position.
- Return the shifter to Park.
- Leave the engine idling.
Step 10: Check Transmission Temperature
- Use the scan tool with transmission temperature data to watch the transmission fluid temperature.
- The level check should be done at about 30-50°C / 86-122°F.
- If the fluid gets too hot, install the fill plug, shut the engine off, and let it cool.
Step 11: Set the Final Fluid Level
- With the engine idling and transmission temperature in range, remove the fill plug using the correct socket from your metric socket set.
- Use the fluid transfer pump to add fluid until a thin stream flows from the fill hole.
- Wait until the stream becomes a slow drip.
- Install the fill plug with a new seal using the correct socket from your metric socket set.
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Shield
- Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to reinstall the lower shield fasteners if removed.
- Use a trim clip remover by hand to guide any clips back into place.
- Tighten shield fasteners snugly. Do not overtighten plastic or small shield hardware.
Step 13: Lower the Truck
- Use the floor jack to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.

- Start your 1500 and let it idle for a minute.
- Check underneath for leaks around the pan, drain plug, and fill plug.
- Take a short, gentle test drive.
- Confirm smooth engagement into Reverse and Drive.
- Recheck for leaks after the test drive.
- No battery registration, infotainment reset, or ADAS calibration is needed for this repair.
- Dispose of used transmission fluid at a recycling center or parts store that accepts used oil.
