🔧 Focus - Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

This procedure covers changing the automatic transmission fluid on your Focus. The 2.0L Focus sedan uses a sealed-style transmission with no traditional dipstick, so fluid level must be checked at the transmission level plug while the fluid is at the correct temperature.

Assumption: Your Focus has the 6-speed automatic transmission. If it has the manual transmission, the fill/check plug locations and fluid type are different.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool vehicle at first, but final fluid level must be checked with the transmission warm.
  • ⚠️ Support your Focus securely on jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid can be hot enough to burn skin. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ Keep the vehicle level during filling and level checking. A tilted car can cause an incorrect fluid level.
  • ⚠️ Do not overfill. Too much fluid can cause foaming, harsh shifts, leaks, or transmission damage.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (8-quart minimum)
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 11mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • Long extension 3/8-inch drive
  • Torque wrench 3/8-inch drive
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • OBD scan tool with transmission temperature display (specialty)
  • Infrared thermometer (specialty)
  • Clean shop rags
  • Plastic trim clip remover

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Motorcraft MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 4-5 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
  • Transmission level/check plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
  • Underbody shield clips - Qty: As needed

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Focus on a flat, level surface and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 📘 A “sealed” transmission means there is no engine-bay dipstick. Fluid is checked at a side level plug.
  • 🌡️ You will need transmission fluid temperature for the final level check. Use an OBD scan tool that can read transmission temperature, or an infrared thermometer aimed at the transmission pan area as a backup.
  • 🔁 Start with 4 quarts available, but do not pour all fluid in blindly. Fill slowly and check the level correctly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and level the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Focus at the proper front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the approved support points.
  • Use the floor jack to raise the rear if needed so the vehicle sits level.
  • Set the vehicle securely on jack stands and gently shake the car to confirm it is stable.
  • Level vehicle equals correct fluid level.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield

  • Use an 8mm socket, 10mm socket, and plastic trim clip remover to remove the lower engine splash shield fasteners.
  • Lower the shield and set it aside.
  • Keep bolts and clips organized so they go back in the same locations.

Step 3: Locate the transmission drain and level plugs

  • Use a work light if available and look at the transmission case on the driver-side area of the drivetrain.
  • The lower plug is the drain plug. The side plug is the level/check plug.
  • A level/check plug is the opening used to confirm the fluid height when the transmission is warm and running.

Step 4: Remove the level/check plug first

  • Place the drain pan under the transmission.
  • Use the correct socket from your set, commonly an 11mm socket or 13mm socket, with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the level/check plug.
  • Remove the plug carefully and inspect the sealing washer.
  • Removing this first confirms you can refill/check the transmission before draining it.
  • Never drain before confirming fill access.

Step 5: Drain the old transmission fluid

  • Move the drain pan directly under the drain plug.
  • Use the correct socket from your set, commonly an 11mm socket or 13mm socket, with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
  • Measure the amount removed if possible. This helps estimate refill amount.
  • Clean the drain plug with clean shop rags.

Step 6: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Install a new transmission drain plug sealing washer.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive with the correct socket to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Pump in fresh transmission fluid

  • Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the level/check plug opening.
  • Pump in Motorcraft MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid slowly.
  • Start with about the same amount that drained out, usually around 3.5-4 quarts for a drain-and-fill.
  • Stop when fluid begins to trickle from the level/check opening.
  • Temporarily install the level/check plug finger-tight using your hand.

Step 8: Warm the transmission fluid

  • Start the engine while your Focus remains level and securely supported.
  • Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
  • Move the shifter slowly through each gear position, pausing 3 seconds in each position, then return to Park.
  • Use the OBD scan tool with transmission temperature display to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  • If using the infrared thermometer, aim at the transmission case near the fluid pan area.
  • Warm the transmission to approximately 85-93°C (185-200°F).

Step 9: Set the final fluid level

  • Leave the engine running, transmission in Park, and parking brake set.
  • Place the drain pan under the level/check plug.
  • Use the correct socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to carefully remove the level/check plug.
  • If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump to add fluid until a thin stream begins to flow out.
  • If a heavy stream comes out, let it drain until it becomes a thin trickle.
  • The correct level is reached when fluid just trickles from the level/check opening at the correct temperature.
  • A thin trickle is the target.

Step 10: Reinstall the level/check plug

  • Install a new transmission level/check plug sealing washer.
  • Thread the level/check plug in by hand first.
  • Use the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive with the correct socket to tighten the plug.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with clean shop rags.

Step 11: Reinstall the lower splash shield

  • Position the splash shield back under your Focus.
  • Use the 8mm socket, 10mm socket, and plastic trim clip remover to reinstall the bolts and clips.
  • Snug the small shield fasteners by hand with the ratchet. Do not overtighten plastic or small fasteners.

Step 12: Lower the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to raise your Focus slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test drive your Focus for 10-15 minutes and check for smooth engagement in Drive and Reverse.
  • ✅ Recheck underneath for leaks around the drain plug and level/check plug.
  • ✅ If shifts feel harsh, delayed, or slipping, stop driving and recheck the fluid level at the correct temperature.
  • ✅ Dispose of used transmission fluid at an approved recycling center or auto parts store.
  • ✅ No battery registration, coding, or infotainment reset is required for this service.
