🔧 Tucson - Automatic Transmission Fluid Change
This repair drains and refills the automatic transmission fluid in your Tucson. Fresh fluid helps the transmission shift smoothly and reduces internal wear.
Assumption: This procedure is for the factory 6-speed Hyundai automatic transmission using Hyundai/Kia SP-IV specification fluid.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool vehicle first, because transmission fluid can burn skin when hot.
- ⚠️ Keep your Tucson level during filling and level checking, or the fluid level will be wrong.
- ⚠️ Never rely on a floor jack alone. A floor jack lifts the vehicle; jack stands safely hold it up.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves because fluid may splash when the drain plug is removed.
- ⚠️ Do not overfill. Too much fluid can cause foaming, slipping, harsh shifts, or leaks.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack rated 3-ton minimum
- Jack stands rated 3-ton minimum
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan 8-quart minimum
- 3/8-inch drive ratchet
- 10mm socket
- 17mm socket
- 24mm socket
- Torque wrench 10-80 ft-lb range
- Long-neck transmission funnel
- Fluid transfer pump with hose
- Clean measuring container marked in quarts
- Infrared thermometer
- Shop towels
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid Hyundai/Kia SP-IV specification - Qty: 4-5 quarts
- Automatic transmission drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
- Automatic transmission level check plug washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Tucson on a flat, level surface.
- Apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Start with the transmission warm, not hot. A short 5-10 minute drive is enough.
- Shift slowly through P, R, N, D, then back to P before shutting the engine off.
- Measure the fluid you drain out. This helps you add roughly the same amount back before final level checking.
- Use only SP-IV specification fluid. Do not use universal ATF unless it clearly states Hyundai/Kia SP-IV compatibility.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Tucson at the proper front lifting point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper support points.
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the rear if needed so the vehicle sits level.
- Place the rear on jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
- Level vehicle equals accurate fluid level.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same locations.
Step 3: Locate the Transmission Plugs
- Find the automatic transmission drain plug at the lower area of the transmission case.
- Find the fill plug on the upper/side area of the transmission case.
- Find the level check plug on the side of the transmission case. The level check plug is used to confirm the correct fluid height when the transmission is warm.
- Use shop towels to clean dirt from around each plug before opening anything.
Step 4: Remove the Fill Plug First
- Use a 24mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen and remove the fill plug.
- This confirms you can refill the transmission before draining it.
- If the fill plug will not loosen, stop and do not drain the fluid yet.
Step 5: Drain the Old Fluid
- Place the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the transmission drain plug.
- Use a 24mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to carefully remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
- Pour the old fluid into a clean measuring container marked in quarts and note the amount removed.
- Expect about 3.5-4.5 quarts.
Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Install a new automatic transmission drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 24mm socket and torque wrench 10-80 ft-lb range to tighten the drain plug.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Add New Transmission Fluid
- Place the long-neck transmission funnel into the fill opening if access allows.
- If access is tight, use the fluid transfer pump with hose to pump fluid into the fill opening.
- Add the same amount of automatic transmission fluid Hyundai/Kia SP-IV specification that you drained out.
- Install the fill plug finger-tight for now using your hand only.
Step 8: Warm the Fluid and Circulate It
- Start the engine while the vehicle remains level and safely supported.
- Keep your foot on the brake pedal.
- Move the shifter slowly through P, R, N, D, then back to P, pausing 3 seconds in each position.
- Use the infrared thermometer to monitor the transmission pan/case temperature.
- Target fluid temperature is approximately 50-60°C (122-140°F) for level checking.
Step 9: Check the Fluid Level
- Leave the engine running with the shifter in Park.
- Place the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the level check plug.
- Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the level check plug.
- A thin stream or steady drip means the level is correct.
- If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump with hose to add SP-IV fluid through the fill opening until fluid begins to drip from the level check hole.
- If fluid pours out heavily, let it drain until it becomes a thin stream or drip.
- Do not shut engine off during level check.
Step 10: Reinstall the Level Check Plug
- Install a new automatic transmission level check plug washer on the level check plug.
- Thread the plug in by hand first.
- Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench 10-80 ft-lb range to tighten the level check plug.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Tighten the Fill Plug
- Shut the engine off.
- Use a 24mm socket and torque wrench 10-80 ft-lb range to tighten the fill plug.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
- Use shop towels to wipe all fluid residue from the transmission case.
Step 12: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Position the lower splash shield back in place.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the fasteners snugly.
- Do not overtighten small splash shield bolts, because they can strip easily.
Step 13: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to slightly raise the vehicle off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Tucson and let it idle for 1 minute.
- Move the shifter through all gear positions while holding the brake.
- Take a short 5-10 minute test drive and check for smooth shifts.
- Park on level ground and inspect underneath for leaks around the drain plug, level plug, and fill plug.
- Dispose of the old fluid at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used oil and ATF.
- No battery registration, coding, infotainment reset, or ADAS calibration is required for this repair.
