🔧 Tucson - Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill

This procedure changes the automatic transmission fluid in your Tucson using the drain-and-fill method. Your Tucson’s 6-speed automatic transmission does not use a normal dipstick, so the final level is checked through a level/check plug at the correct fluid temperature.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Tucson on a flat, level surface.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🅿️ Set the parking brake.
  • 🌡️ Let the transmission cool if the vehicle was just driven.
  • 📏 Measure the old fluid that comes out so you know roughly how much to add back.
  • 🔍 Your Tucson has no regular transmission dipstick. Fluid level is set using the level/check plug.
  • 🧰 A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that moves new fluid from the bottle into the transmission.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Support Your Tucson

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Tucson.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
  • If needed, lift and support the rear with jack stands rated 3-ton minimum so the vehicle sits level.
  • Gently shake the vehicle by hand to make sure it is stable.
  • Level vehicle equals correct fluid level.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket, socket extension 6-inch 3/8-inch drive, and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the lower splash shield bolts.
  • Lower the splash shield and set it aside.

Step 3: Find the Transmission Plugs

  • Use shop towels lint-free to clean around the transmission plugs.
  • Locate the drain plug at the lower part of the transmission case.
  • Locate the fill plug higher on the transmission case.
  • Locate the level/check plug on the side of the transmission case.
  • The level/check plug lets extra fluid drain out when the fluid level is correct.

Step 4: Loosen the Fill Plug First

  • Use a 24mm socket, socket extension 6-inch 3/8-inch drive, and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to loosen the fill plug.
  • Do not remove the drain plug until the fill plug can be opened.
  • If the fill plug is stuck, stop the job and reinstall anything removed.
  • Never drain before confirming refill access.

Step 5: Drain the Old Fluid

  • Place a drain pan 10-quart under the transmission drain plug.
  • Use a 24mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
  • Pour the drained fluid into a measuring container 5-quart to measure the amount removed.
  • Clean the drain plug with shop towels lint-free.

Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Install a new transmission drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first. This prevents cross-threading.
  • Use a 24mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive foot-pound to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Add New Transmission Fluid

  • Remove the fill plug fully using a 24mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive.
  • Use a fluid transfer pump 1-quart to pump in the same amount of automatic transmission fluid meeting Hyundai SP-IV specification that came out.
  • Add about 0.25 quart extra so the final level check can drain off the excess.
  • Install the fill plug by hand only for now.

Step 8: Warm the Fluid for Level Check

  • Connect an OBD2 scan tool with transmission fluid temperature data (specialty).
  • Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
  • Move the shifter slowly through P, R, N, D, then back to P.
  • Pause about 3 seconds in each gear position.
  • Let the engine idle until transmission fluid temperature is about 50-60°C (122-140°F).
  • If you do not have a scan tool, use an infrared thermometer (specialty) on the transmission pan area as a less-accurate backup.
  • Scan tool temperature is the best method.

Step 9: Set the Final Fluid Level

  • Keep the engine idling and the shifter in Park.
  • Place the drain pan 10-quart under the level/check plug.
  • Use a 17mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the level/check plug.
  • If fluid flows out steadily, wait until it becomes a light trickle.
  • If no fluid comes out, reinstall the level/check plug loosely, turn the engine OFF, add 0.25-0.5 quart with the fluid transfer pump 1-quart, then repeat the check.
  • The correct level is reached when fluid lightly trickles from the check port at the correct temperature.

Step 10: Tighten the Level/Check Plug

  • Install a new transmission level check plug gasket or O-ring if your plug uses one.
  • Thread the level/check plug in by hand.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive foot-pound to tighten it to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Tighten the Fill Plug

  • Turn the engine OFF.
  • Install a new transmission fill plug gasket or O-ring if your fill plug uses one.
  • Use a 24mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive foot-pound to tighten the fill plug to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the transmission case clean with shop towels lint-free.

Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Lift the lower splash shield into position by hand.
  • Start all bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 10mm socket, socket extension 6-inch 3/8-inch drive, and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the bolts snugly.

Step 13: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Tucson slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Tucson slowly to the ground using the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test drive your Tucson for 10-15 minutes with light throttle.
  • ✅ Make sure shifts feel smooth and normal.
  • ✅ Park on level ground and check underneath for leaks.
  • ✅ If shifting feels harsh, delayed, or unusual, stop driving and recheck the fluid level at the correct temperature.
  • ✅ Recycle the used transmission fluid at an approved fluid recycling location.
