📋 Before You Begin

• 🚗 Park your Fusion on a flat, level surface.
• 🧱 Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• 📌 A torque wrench tightens bolts to a measured tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.
• 📌 A fluid transfer pump moves new fluid from the bottle into the transmission when a funnel cannot reach cleanly.
• 🌡️ The final fluid level must be checked with the transmission fluid warm, ideally using an OBD2 scan tool that can read transmission fluid temperature.
• 📌 If your scan tool cannot read transmission temperature, use an infrared thermometer on the transmission pan/case as a backup estimate, but scan-tool temperature is preferred.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the Transmission Fluid

• Start the engine and drive your Fusion for 10-15 minutes so the transmission fluid flows easily.
• Park on a level surface after the short drive.
• Move the shifter slowly through each gear position, pausing 2 seconds in each range, then return to Park.
• Shut the engine off.
• Warm fluid drains faster.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

• Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Fusion at the approved front jacking point.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
• Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
• Keep the vehicle as level as possible for an accurate fill level.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Use an 8mm socket, 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
• Set the splash shield and fasteners aside in order.
• Use a small tray.

Step 4: Locate the Transmission Drain Plug

• Use a flashlight to identify the transmission drain plug on the lower transmission case.
• Position a 10-quart drain pan under the drain plug.
• Clean around the drain plug with shop towels before removing it.

Step 5: Drain the Old Fluid

• Use an 11mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the transmission drain plug.
• Remove the plug by hand once loose and let the fluid drain into the 10-quart drain pan.
• Allow the fluid to drain until it slows to a drip.
• Inspect the old fluid. Dark fluid is common, but heavy metal flakes or a burnt smell can indicate internal wear.
• Do not flush a failing unit.

Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Install a new transmission drain plug sealing washer on the drain plug if equipped.
• Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use an 11mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
• Wipe the drain plug area clean with shop towels.

Step 7: Add New Transmission Fluid

• Lower your Fusion enough that it sits level, or keep it safely level on stands.
• Open the hood and locate the transmission fluid fill point/dipstick area near the transmission side of the engine bay.
• Use a long-neck funnel or fluid transfer pump to add Mercon LV automatic transmission fluid.
• Add about 3.5 quarts first, then pause.
• Do not overfill. You will fine-tune the level during the warm level check.

Step 8: Circulate the New Fluid

• Start the engine with the parking brake applied.
• Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
• Move the shifter slowly through Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and back to Park, pausing 2-3 seconds in each position.
• Use the OBD2 scan tool to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
• Let the transmission warm to about 85-93°C (185-200°F) for the final level check.

Step 9: Check and Adjust Fluid Level

• With the engine idling, parking brake set, and transmission in Park, check the transmission fluid level.
• If equipped with a dipstick, use shop towels to wipe the dipstick, reinsert it fully, then remove it again to read the level.
• The fluid should be in the hot range when the transmission is at 85-93°C (185-200°F).
• If low, use the long-neck funnel or fluid transfer pump to add small amounts of Mercon LV automatic transmission fluid.
• Recheck after each small addition.
• If overfilled, drain a small amount using the 11mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and drain pan, then reinstall the plug to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
• Small additions are safest.

Step 10: Reinstall the Splash Shield

• Shut the engine off after the level is correct.
• Use the 8mm socket, 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to reinstall the lower splash shield fasteners.
• Tighten the splash shield fasteners snugly by hand. No published torque is required for these small shield fasteners.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Fusion slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands.
• Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
• Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 12: Road Test

• Drive gently for 10-15 minutes.
• Confirm smooth engagement into Reverse and Drive.
• Check that shifts feel normal under light throttle.
• Park on level ground and inspect underneath for leaks using a flashlight.
