🔧 Corolla - Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill

This service replaces part of the automatic transmission fluid by draining the pan and refilling through the dipstick tube. A drain-and-fill is safer for a higher-mileage Corolla than a machine flush because it does not force fluid through the transmission.

Assumption: Your Corolla has the automatic transmission with a transmission dipstick.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid gets hot enough to burn skin. Let your Corolla cool before starting.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands only. Never work under a car held up by just a jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the transmission. Even small debris can cause shifting problems.
  • ⚠️ Do not overfill. Too much fluid can cause foaming, slipping, harsh shifts, and leaks.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive torque wrench
  • Drain pan 8-quart minimum
  • Long-neck transmission funnel
  • Fluid measuring container 5-quart minimum
  • Floor jack rated 2-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 2-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 4 quarts
  • Automatic transmission drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Corolla on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Drive gently for 5-10 minutes if you want the fluid warm, not hot.
  • Raise the front of the car with a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and support it with jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to a specific tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.
  • A drain-and-fill usually replaces about 2.5-3.5 quarts, not the full transmission capacity.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Lower Splash Shield if Needed

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any lower splash shield fasteners blocking access to the transmission drain plug.
  • Set the fasteners aside in order so they go back into the same locations.
  • Take a quick photo first.

Step 2: Locate the Transmission Drain Plug

  • Look under the driver-side/front area of the drivetrain for the automatic transmission pan and drain plug.
  • Use shop towels to wipe dirt away from the drain plug area before opening it.
  • Position the drain pan 8-quart minimum directly under the drain plug.

Step 3: Drain the Old Fluid

  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the transmission drain plug.
  • Remove the plug by hand once loose and let the fluid drain fully into the drain pan 8-quart minimum.
  • Let it drain until it slows to a drip.
  • Use shop towels to clean the drain plug.

Step 4: Measure the Drained Fluid

  • Carefully pour the old fluid from the drain pan 8-quart minimum into the fluid measuring container 5-quart minimum.
  • Write down the amount removed.
  • This amount is your starting refill amount.
  • Matching the amount removed prevents overfilling.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Install a new automatic transmission drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Lower the Vehicle Level

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the car slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Corolla carefully until all four wheels are on level ground.
  • The vehicle must be level when checking fluid level.

Step 7: Refill Through the Transmission Dipstick Tube

  • Open the hood and locate the automatic transmission dipstick.
  • Remove the dipstick by hand.
  • Insert the long-neck transmission funnel into the dipstick tube.
  • Pour in the same amount of Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid that you measured coming out.
  • Pour slowly to prevent spills and air bubbles.

Step 8: Circulate the Fluid

  • Start the engine with your foot on the brake.
  • Move the shifter slowly through each gear position, pausing 2-3 seconds in each position.
  • Return the shifter to Park and keep the engine idling.
  • Use shop towels to wipe any spilled fluid from the dipstick tube area.

Step 9: Check the Fluid Level

  • With the engine idling on level ground, pull the transmission dipstick out by hand.
  • Wipe it clean with a shop towel.
  • Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again.
  • Check the fluid level against the HOT marks after the transmission is warmed up.
  • If low, add Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid in small amounts using the long-neck transmission funnel.
  • Do not add more than 0.25 quart at a time before rechecking.

Step 10: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Turn the engine off.
  • If removed, raise the front slightly with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and support it with jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the lower splash shield fasteners.
  • Do not overtighten small plastic or sheet-metal fasteners.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test drive your Corolla for 10-15 minutes using gentle acceleration.
  • ✅ Recheck the transmission fluid level on level ground with the engine idling.
  • ✅ Look under the car for leaks around the drain plug.
  • ✅ Dispose of old transmission fluid at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used fluid.
  • ✅ If shifting becomes harsh, delayed, or slipping occurs, stop driving and recheck the fluid level immediately.
