🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the F-150
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of the truck at the proper front crossmember lift point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
- Shake test before crawling under.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Shield if Equipped
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic retainers from the lower shield.
- Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove shield bolts, depending on the fastener style installed.
- Set the shield and hardware aside in order.
Step 3: Locate the Transmission Pan and Fill Plug
- Use a flashlight if needed to locate the transmission pan under the center of the truck.
- The fill/check plug is on the transmission case area, not at the top like an engine oil fill cap.
- Before draining anything, make sure you can access and loosen the fill/check plug.
- Always confirm refill access first.
Step 4: Loosen the Fill/Check Plug First
- Use the correct socket from your set, commonly a 13mm socket, with a ratchet 3/8-inch drive to carefully loosen the fill/check plug.
- Do not remove it fully yet unless fluid starts dripping out.
- If the plug is stuck, stop and do not drain the transmission.
Step 5: Drain the Transmission Pan
- Place a drain pan 10-quart minimum under the transmission pan.
- If your pan has a drain plug, use the correct socket, commonly a 13mm socket, to remove it and drain the fluid.
- If your pan does not have a drain plug, use a 10mm socket to slowly loosen the pan bolts around the rear and sides first.
- Leave a few bolts loosely installed at the front so the pan tilts down and drains in a controlled way.
- Once fluid slows, remove the remaining pan bolts with the 10mm socket.
Step 6: Remove the Transmission Pan
- Support the pan with one hand and use the 10mm socket to remove the last bolts.
- Lower the pan carefully because it may still contain fluid.
- Pour the remaining fluid into the drain pan.
- Inspect the pan for metal chunks. A light gray paste on the magnet is normal wear material.
Step 7: Replace the Transmission Filter
- Use the correct socket, commonly a 10mm socket, to remove the transmission filter fasteners if equipped.
- Pull the filter straight down by hand. Some fluid will spill.
- Make sure the old filter seal comes out with the old filter.
- Install the new automatic transmission filter by pressing it straight into place.
- Use the torque wrench 1/4-inch drive to tighten filter bolts if equipped to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 8: Clean the Pan and Gasket Surface
- Use a plastic scraper to gently remove old gasket material from the pan surface.
- Use brake cleaner spray and lint-free shop towels to clean the pan and magnet.
- Do not use a metal scraper on aluminum sealing surfaces.
- Install the new transmission pan gasket onto the pan.
Step 9: Reinstall the Transmission Pan
- Raise the pan into place by hand.
- Start all pan bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket to snug the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the torque wrench 1/4-inch drive to tighten the pan bolts evenly to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- If removed, reinstall the drain plug with a new seal and use a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten to Torque to 16 Nm (12 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Add New Transmission Fluid
- Remove the fill/check plug fully using the correct socket, commonly a 13mm socket.
- Install the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the fill/check opening.
- Pump in MERCON ULV automatic transmission fluid until fluid begins to lightly run back out of the fill/check opening.
- Temporarily install the fill/check plug by hand.
Step 11: Warm the Transmission and Cycle the Gears
- Start the engine while the truck remains level and safely supported.
- Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
- Move the shifter slowly through each gear position, pausing 3 seconds in each position.
- Return the shifter to Park.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool with transmission temperature data to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
Step 12: Set the Final Fluid Level
- With the engine running, transmission in Park, parking brake set, and the truck level, monitor fluid temperature with the OBD-II scan tool with transmission temperature data.
- When transmission fluid temperature is approximately 85-93°C (185-200°F), remove the fill/check plug using the correct socket, commonly a 13mm socket.
- If no fluid drips out, use the fluid transfer pump to add MERCON ULV automatic transmission fluid until a thin stream runs out.
- If a heavy stream runs out, let it drain until it becomes a thin drip.
- Install the fill/check plug with a new transmission fill plug seal.
- Use the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the fill/check plug to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Shield
- Use the 8mm socket or 10mm socket to reinstall the lower shield bolts.
- Use the trim clip removal tool by hand to align and reinstall any plastic retainers.
- Snug the small shield bolts only. Do not overtighten plastic shield hardware.
Step 14: Lower the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the F-150 slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.

- ✅ Test drive gently for 10-15 minutes. The shifts should feel smooth and normal.
- ✅ Park on level ground and check under the truck for leaks around the pan and fill/check plug.
- ✅ Recheck for leaks again after the next drive.
- ✅ Dispose of old transmission fluid properly at an approved recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used fluid.
- ✅ If shifting feels harsh, delayed, or abnormal, stop driving and recheck fluid level at the correct temperature.
