This service replaces old transmission fluid so the transmission shifts smoothly and stays protected. Your Frontier may have either the 5-speed automatic transmission or the 6-speed manual transmission, so both procedures are shown below.

• ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the transmission. Clean around fill and drain plugs before opening them.
• ⚠️ Do not use CVT fluid. Your Frontier does not use CVT fluid.
• ⚠️ For the automatic transmission, use Nissan Matic S compatible ATF only.
• ⚠️ For the manual transmission, use Nissan-approved manual transmission gear oil. Do not use automatic transmission fluid in the manual transmission.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Frontier on a flat, level surface.
• Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• If raising the truck, use a floor jack and support it with jack stands at safe frame points.
• Drive for 10-15 minutes first if possible. Warm fluid drains faster.
• A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that pushes fluid from the bottle into a fill hole.
• A crush washer is a soft sealing washer that should be replaced after removal.
• Assumption: Automatic procedure is for the factory 5-speed automatic; manual procedure is for the factory 6-speed manual.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify Which Procedure to Use

• Look inside your Frontier at the shifter.
• If it has PRND gear positions, use Automatic Transmission Procedure.
• If it has a clutch pedal and manual shift pattern, use Manual Transmission Procedure.

Step 2: Raise and Secure the Truck

• Use wheel chocks to block the wheels.
• Use the floor jack to lift your Frontier high enough to work underneath.
• Place jack stands under the frame and gently lower the truck onto them.
• Use safety glasses before going underneath.
• Give the truck a gentle shake.

Step 3A: Automatic Transmission - Remove Skid Plate if Equipped

• Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket if fitted to remove the front skid plate bolts if the plate blocks access.
• Set the skid plate and bolts aside in order.

Step 4A: Automatic Transmission - Drain the Fluid

• Place the 10-quart drain pan under the automatic transmission pan.
• Clean around the drain plug with brake cleaner aerosol and shop rags.
• Use a 19mm socket to loosen and remove the transmission drain plug.
• Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
• Inspect the old fluid. Dark red or brown is common; burnt smell or metal flakes means further diagnosis is needed.

Step 5A: Automatic Transmission - Reinstall Drain Plug

• Install a new automatic transmission drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
• Thread the plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 6A: Automatic Transmission - Refill Through Dipstick Tube

• Open the hood and locate the automatic transmission dipstick tube.
• Use a long-neck funnel in the dipstick tube.
• Add 3.5 quarts of Nissan Matic S compatible ATF first.
• Do not overfill. You will fine-tune the level after warming the transmission.

Step 7A: Automatic Transmission - Check Fluid Level

• Start the engine with your foot on the brake.
• Move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing 2 seconds in each position.
• Return the shifter to Park and leave the engine idling.
• Use a shop rag to wipe the dipstick, reinstall it fully, then check the level again.
• Add fluid through the long-neck funnel in small amounts until it reaches the correct warm range on the dipstick.
• Most drain-and-fill services take about 4 quarts, but always final-check by dipstick level.

Step 8A: Automatic Transmission - Reinstall Skid Plate

• Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket if fitted to reinstall the skid plate bolts.
• Tighten the bolts snugly by hand tool. Do not overtighten small skid plate bolts.

Step 3B: Manual Transmission - Remove the Fill Plug First

• Place the 10-quart drain pan under the manual transmission.
• Clean around the fill and drain plugs with brake cleaner aerosol and shop rags.
• Use a 10mm hex socket or 24mm socket, depending on plug style, to loosen the fill plug first.
• This is important. If the fill plug is stuck, you do not want to drain the transmission first.
• Always remove the fill plug first.

Step 4B: Manual Transmission - Drain the Fluid

• Use the 10mm hex socket or 24mm socket to remove the drain plug.
• Let the gear oil drain completely into the 10-quart drain pan.
• Check the magnetic drain plug for metal fuzz. A light paste is normal; chunks are not normal.

Step 5B: Manual Transmission - Reinstall Drain Plug

• Install a new manual transmission drain plug washer.
• Thread the drain plug in by hand first.
• Use the 10mm hex socket or 24mm socket with a torque wrench.
• Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 6B: Manual Transmission - Fill the Transmission

• Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the fill hole.
• Pump in Nissan-approved GL-4 manual transmission gear oil.
• Fill until fluid just begins to trickle out of the fill hole.
• The truck must be level for this check to be correct.

Step 7B: Manual Transmission - Reinstall Fill Plug

• Install a new manual transmission fill plug washer.
• Thread the fill plug in by hand first.
• Use the 10mm hex socket or 24mm socket with a torque wrench.
• Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Clean and Lower the Truck

• Use brake cleaner aerosol and shop rags to clean spilled fluid from the transmission case.
• Use the floor jack to lift your Frontier slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands.
• Lower the truck slowly with the floor jack.

• ✅ For automatic transmission: recheck the ATF level warm, engine idling, shifter in Park.
• ✅ For manual transmission: test drive and confirm smooth gear engagement.
