🔧 TITAN - Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

This service replaces the automatic transmission fluid in your TITAN’s 7-speed automatic transmission. This transmission uses a drain-and-fill process with a level check at a specific fluid temperature, so the fluid level must be set carefully.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Automatic transmission fluid gets very hot. Let the truck cool before opening any drain or check plugs.
  • ⚠️ The truck must be level when checking the fluid level. A tilted truck can cause an overfill or underfill.
  • ⚠️ Never crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Use rated jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Keep the engine running during the final level check. Use the parking brake and wheel chocks.
  • ⚠️ Do not overfill. Too much fluid can cause foaming, harsh shifting, overheating, or transmission damage.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your TITAN on a flat, level surface.
  • Set the parking brake firmly and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • If lifting the truck, use a floor jack and support it evenly with jack stands so the truck stays level.
  • A scan tool is an electronic tool that reads live vehicle data. For this job, it must show transmission fluid temperature.
  • A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that pushes new fluid upward into the transmission fill port.
  • Do not flush this transmission with a power-flush machine. A drain-and-fill is the safer DIY method.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the Transmission Slightly

  • Start the engine and let your TITAN idle for a few minutes.
  • Use the brake pedal and shift slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing 2-3 seconds in each position.
  • Shift back to Park and shut the engine off.
  • Use a scan tool with transmission fluid temperature data if available. Warm fluid drains better, but it should not be burning hot.
  • Warm, not hot, is best.

Step 2: Raise and Secure the Truck

  • Use a floor jack to lift your TITAN only if you need more room underneath.
  • Place jack stands under approved frame support points.
  • Use an infrared thermometer or a level visual check to make sure the truck is sitting level front-to-rear and side-to-side.
  • Keep wheel chocks in place.

Step 3: Remove the Underbody Shield if Equipped

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 14mm socket, or flat-blade screwdriver as needed to remove the lower shield fasteners.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
  • Reinstall shield fasteners later snugly if no exact torque is available: Torque to 7-10 Nm (62-89 in-lbs) for small 10mm-head fasteners.

Step 4: Locate the Transmission Drain and Fill/Check Plug

  • Use a shop towel to wipe dirt from the transmission pan area.
  • Identify the drain plug at the transmission pan.
  • Identify the fill/check plug on the transmission case or pan area. This is used to add fluid and set the final level.
  • Use a 19mm socket or the correct socket from your metric socket set to confirm the fill/check plug can loosen before draining.
  • Always loosen fill before drain.

Step 5: Drain the Old Fluid

  • Place a 10-quart drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
  • Use a 19mm socket or correct-size socket from your metric socket set to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
  • Use a measuring container with quart markings to measure the amount removed.
  • Clean the drain plug with shop towels.

Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Install a new transmission drain plug washer.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench with the correct socket to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 7: Add New Transmission Fluid

  • Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the fill/check opening.
  • Pump in the same amount of Nissan Matic S-compatible automatic transmission fluid that you drained out.
  • Add fluid slowly to avoid spills.
  • Temporarily install the fill/check plug finger-tight.
  • Measure what came out.

Step 8: Circulate the New Fluid

  • Start the engine while your TITAN is still level and safely supported.
  • Keep your foot on the brake pedal.
  • Move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing 2-3 seconds in each gear.
  • Return the shifter to Park and leave the engine idling.
  • Use the scan tool with transmission fluid temperature data to monitor fluid temperature.

Step 9: Set the Final Fluid Level

  • With the engine idling and the truck level, monitor transmission fluid temperature with the scan tool.
  • When fluid temperature is approximately 35-45°C (95-113°F), remove the fill/check plug using the correct socket from your metric socket set.
  • If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump to add small amounts until fluid begins to trickle from the check opening.
  • If fluid flows heavily, let it drain until it becomes a thin stream or drip.
  • The correct level is reached when fluid comes out as a small trickle at the specified temperature range.
  • Install a new transmission fill/check plug washer.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the fill/check plug: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Clean and Reinstall the Shield

  • Use brake cleaner and shop towels to clean any spilled fluid from the transmission pan and crossmember.
  • Reinstall the underbody shield if removed.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 14mm socket, or flat-blade screwdriver to reinstall the fasteners.
  • For small shield bolts, tighten gently: Torque to 7-10 Nm (62-89 in-lbs).

Step 11: Lower the Truck

  • Use the floor jack to lift slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your TITAN slowly to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks after the truck is fully on the ground.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Shift through all gear positions again, pausing briefly in each one.
  • Road test gently for 10-15 minutes. Check for smooth engagement and normal shifting.
  • Park on level ground and inspect underneath for leaks around the drain plug and fill/check plug.
  • No battery registration, coding, or infotainment reset is required.
  • Dispose of used transmission fluid at a proper recycling center or auto parts store.
