📋 Before You Begin

• 🛞 Place wheel chocks at the wheels that stay on the ground.
• 🌡️ For the most accurate fill, fluid should be checked warm, not cold. An infrared thermometer reads surface temperature without touching it.
• 📏 Measure the amount drained so you can refill the same amount first.
• ⚠️ Do not open the transmission if dirt, sand, or water can enter the fill area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the Fluid Slightly

• Start your Edge and let it idle for a few minutes.
• Drive gently for 5-10 minutes if the vehicle is safe to drive.
• Park on level ground and move the shifter slowly through each gear, then back to Park.
• Turn the engine off before draining.
• Warm fluid drains faster.

Step 2: Raise and Level the Vehicle

• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Edge at the approved lift points.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved support points.
• Make sure the vehicle sits level front-to-back and side-to-side.
• Use wheel chocks for extra safety.
• Never work under a jack alone.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Shield

• Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
• Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic push clips.
• Set the shield aside where it will not get stepped on.

Step 4: Locate the Transmission Drain Plug

• Look at the lower transmission case area on the driver side of the powertrain.
• Place a drain pan 10-quart minimum under the drain plug.
• Use shop towels to clean around the plug before removal.

Step 5: Drain the Old Transmission Fluid

• Use an 11mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the transmission drain plug.
• Remove the plug by hand once loose and let the fluid drain fully.
• Expect around 4-5 quarts during a normal drain-and-fill, not the full transmission capacity.
• Inspect the fluid. Dark fluid is common; burnt smell or metal flakes may indicate internal wear.
• Keep the drain pan centered.

Step 6: Measure the Drained Fluid

• Pour the used fluid from the drain pan 10-quart minimum into a measuring jug 5-quart minimum.
• Write down the exact amount removed.
• This gives you the starting refill amount.

Step 7: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Install a new transmission drain plug seal on the plug.
• Thread the plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use an 11mm socket and torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).

Step 8: Access the Transmission Fill Point

• Open the hood and locate the transmission fluid fill cap/dipstick area near the transmission side of the engine bay.
• Wipe the area clean with shop towels before opening it.
• If access is tight, use a 3/8-inch extension set to move nearby retainers only if needed.

Step 9: Refill the Transmission

• Place a long-neck transmission funnel into the fill tube.
• Add automatic transmission fluid Mercon LV equal to the amount drained.
• If access requires pumping fluid instead of pouring, use a fluid transfer pump.
• Add fluid slowly to prevent overflow.
• Use only Mercon LV fluid.

Step 10: Warm and Circulate the Fluid

• Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
• Move the shifter slowly through Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and Sport/Low if equipped, pausing 3 seconds in each position.
• Return the shifter to Park and leave the engine idling.
• Use an infrared thermometer to monitor the transmission pan/case temperature.

Step 11: Check and Adjust Fluid Level

• With the engine idling and your Edge level, check the transmission fluid level at the transmission dipstick/fill indicator if equipped.
• Use shop towels to wipe the indicator, reinsert it fully, then check again.
• Add automatic transmission fluid Mercon LV in small amounts using the long-neck transmission funnel if low.
• Do not overfill. Too much fluid can cause foaming and shifting problems.
• If your Edge uses a level plug style check, use the fluid transfer pump and check with fluid warm until fluid just dribbles from the level port.

Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Shield

• Turn the engine off after the level is correct.
• Use shop towels to clean any spilled fluid.
• Position the lower splash shield back in place.
• Use a trim clip removal tool to reinstall plastic push clips.
• Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to reinstall the shield fasteners snugly.

Step 13: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Edge slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
