🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Warm the Transmission Slightly
- Use the scan tool to watch transmission fluid temperature.
- Start your Tacoma and let it idle for a few minutes if the fluid is very cold.
- Shift slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing 2 seconds in each position, then return to Park.
- Turn the engine off before going underneath.
- Warm fluid drains faster.
Step 2: Remove the Skid/Access Shield if Equipped
- Use a 10mm socket and 14mm socket to remove any underbody shield blocking access to the transmission pan.
- Set the fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same locations.
Step 3: Locate the Transmission Plugs
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a light to identify the three plugs:
- Fill plug: on the side of the transmission case.
- Drain plug: at the bottom of the transmission pan.
- Overflow/check plug: small inner plug used to set final level.
- The overflow plug is part of Toyota’s sealed transmission level system. It lets extra fluid drain out when the transmission is at the correct temperature.
Step 4: Remove the Fill Plug First
- Use a 24mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the fill plug.
- Do not drain the transmission until the fill plug is confirmed removable.
- This prevents a no-refill problem.
Step 5: Drain the Old Fluid
- Place the 8-quart drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Use the correct socket for the drain plug, usually a 14mm socket, and remove the drain plug slowly.
- Let the fluid drain until it becomes a slow drip.
- Measure the drained fluid amount if possible. Add back roughly the same amount before the final level check.
Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Install a new automatic transmission drain plug gasket.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Add New Transmission Fluid
- Install the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the transmission fill opening.
- Pump in Toyota WS-compatible automatic transmission fluid.
- Add about the same amount that drained out, then add an extra 0.5 quart for the level-check step.
- Install the fill plug loosely by hand for now.
Step 8: Bring Fluid to Level-Check Temperature
- Connect the OBD-II scan tool and display live transmission fluid temperature.
- Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
- Shift slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing 2 seconds in each position, then return to Park.
- Keep the engine idling until fluid temperature reaches 104-113°F.
- Do not shut the engine off during the level check.
Step 9: Set the Final Fluid Level
- With the engine idling and the transmission temperature at 104-113°F, place the 8-quart drain pan under the overflow/check plug.
- Use a 6mm hex socket to remove the overflow/check plug.
- If fluid pours out heavily, let it drain until it becomes a thin stream or steady drip.
- If no fluid comes out, reinstall the overflow plug loosely, add 0.25 quart through the fill hole with the fluid transfer pump, then check again.
- The correct level is reached when fluid comes out as a thin stream or steady drip at 104-113°F.
Step 10: Reinstall the Overflow/Check Plug
- Install a new automatic transmission overflow plug gasket.
- Use the 6mm hex socket and torque wrench to tighten the overflow/check plug to Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean with shop towels.
Step 11: Reinstall the Fill Plug
- Turn the engine off.
- Install a new automatic transmission fill plug gasket.
- Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the fill plug to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Reinstall the Shield
- Use the 10mm socket and 14mm socket to reinstall any underbody shield removed earlier.
- Tighten the shield fasteners snugly. Do not overtighten small splash shield bolts.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Tacoma and let it idle for 1 minute.
- ✅ Shift through all gear positions again, then return to Park.
- ✅ Check underneath for leaks at the drain, fill, and overflow/check plugs.
