🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Warm and Position the Vehicle
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to monitor the transmission-fluid temperature while taking a short 5-10 minute drive.
- Park on level ground, apply the parking brake, and use wheel chocks to secure the vehicle.
- Switch off the engine and allow hot components to cool enough to touch safely.
- If lifting is necessary, use the 3-ton floor jack and four 3-ton jack stands to raise and support your 4Runner evenly.
- Use the mechanic’s creeper to inspect the vehicle’s stability before reaching the transmission.
Step 2: Remove the Transmission Skid Plate if Necessary
- Use the 12mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the transmission skid-plate fasteners if the plate blocks the transmission pan.
- Support the plate with one hand while removing the final fastener. It is heavier than it appears.
- Set the plate and fasteners aside in their installed order.
Step 3: Loosen the Fill Plug First
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic’s gloves.
- Locate the fill plug on the passenger side of the transmission case.
- Use the 24mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen and remove the fill plug.
- Do not drain the transmission unless the fill plug can be removed. This prevents being left with an empty transmission that cannot be refilled.
- Inspect the plug threads and remove the old sealing washer.
- Always open the fill plug before draining.
Step 4: Drain the Old Fluid
- Place the 8-quart drain pan directly beneath the transmission drain plug.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the drain plug carefully.
- Allow the fluid to drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
- Use the graduated measuring container to measure the amount removed. A normal drain-and-refill commonly removes approximately 3-4 quarts.
- Inspect the fluid using the safety glasses and gloves. A dark color can be normal, but metal flakes, heavy debris, or a strong burned smell indicate that further diagnosis is needed.
Step 5: Service the Overflow Plug
- Locate the small overflow plug within the transmission-pan drain area. The overflow tube behind this plug establishes the correct fluid height.
- Use the 5mm hex-bit socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the overflow plug.
- Allow any remaining fluid to drain into the drain pan.
- Install a new overflow-plug sealing gasket.
- Use the 5mm hex-bit socket and inch-pound torque wrench to install the overflow plug. Torque to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten this small plug; the transmission-pan threads can be damaged easily.
Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Use shop towels and brake cleaner to clean the drain plug and the sealing surface.
- Install a new drain-plug sealing washer.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug. Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Add New Transmission Fluid
- Attach the ATF fluid-transfer pump to a container of Toyota Genuine ATF WS or Toyota WS-approved fluid.
- Insert the pump hose into the transmission fill opening.
- Use the fluid-transfer pump to add approximately the same quantity measured during draining.
- Continue pumping until a small amount begins to run back out of the fill opening.
- Temporarily install the fill plug by hand with its new sealing washer. Do not perform final tightening yet.
Step 8: Circulate the New Fluid
- Lower your 4Runner with the 3-ton floor jack if it cannot be started safely while raised. Keep it level for the final check.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to display the automatic transmission fluid temperature.
- Start the engine with your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
- Move the selector slowly through P > R > N > D, pausing approximately three seconds in each position.
- Use the selector to move through the available manual ranges, pausing approximately three seconds in each, and then return to Park.
- Leave the engine idling. Do not raise engine speed.
Step 9: Check the Fluid Level at the Correct Temperature
- Watch the OBD-II scan tool until the transmission-fluid temperature reaches 40-45°C (104-113°F).
- With the engine still idling and your 4Runner level, use the 5mm hex-bit socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the overflow plug.
- If fluid exits as a thin stream and then slows to a steady drip, the level is correct.
- If no fluid exits, use the ATF fluid-transfer pump through the fill opening to add Toyota WS fluid until it begins to overflow.
- If fluid pours out heavily, allow the excess to drain until only a thin stream or steady drip remains.
- Install the overflow plug with its gasket while the fluid is still within the specified temperature range.
- Use the 5mm hex-bit socket and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten it. Torque to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs).
- If the fluid temperature exceeds 45°C (113°F) before the level is set, reinstall the plugs, switch off the engine, allow the transmission to cool, and repeat this step.
Step 10: Tighten the Fill Plug
- Switch off the engine after completing the level check.
- Install a new fill-plug sealing washer if it was not already fitted.
- Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the fill plug. Torque to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs).
- Use shop towels and brake cleaner to remove spilled fluid from the transmission case and pan.
Step 11: Reinstall the Skid Plate
- Lift the transmission skid plate into position by hand.
- Start every fastener by hand before using tools.
- Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the original skid-plate fasteners to their factory specification for their installed positions. Do not use an impact wrench.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to lower your 4Runner if it remains on jack stands, then remove the four jack stands and wheel chocks.
