This one is manageable for a careful beginner. Your Insight needs a simple drain and refill, not a pressurized flush. Despite the “e-CVT” name, it requires Honda ATF DW-1, not Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid or universal CVT fluid. Important: The universal and conventional CVT fluids currently displayed aren’t the right specification for your Insight. Use fluid clearly labeled Honda ATF DW-1. Wrong fluid is expensive shop-floor confetti.
📋 Before You Begin
- 📋 Drive the Insight for approximately 10 minutes so the fluid becomes warm, not scorching hot.
- 📋 Park on firm, level ground, select Park, engage the parking brake and turn the power system off.
- 📋 Place wheel chocks securely around the wheels remaining on the ground.
- 📋 Raise and support all four corners at equal height if additional working room is required.
- 📋 Confirm the car is stable by giving it a careful push before getting underneath.
- 📋 No infotainment service mode, scan tool command, battery registration or hybrid-system isolation is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and level the vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2 tons minimum at the approved center lifting points.
- Position the four jack stands rated 2 tons minimum beneath the reinforced side support points.
- Verify the car is level from front to rear and side to side.
- Never trust a hydraulic jack alone.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use the Phillips screwdriver No. 2, flat-blade screwdriver, 10mm socket and plastic trim-clip removal tool to remove the applicable screws, bolts and push clips.
- Support the panel while removing its final fasteners, then lower it carefully.
- Arrange the fasteners by location so they return to the correct holes.
Step 3: Locate and loosen the transmission fill plug
- Locate the transmission fill opening above the transmission case. Depending on access, it may be reached from above after moving the intake duct or through the service area underneath.
- Use the 10mm socket to loosen the intake duct fasteners if additional access is required.
- Remove the fill plug by hand or with the appropriate installed tool arrangement.
- Clean around the opening with shop towels before removing it completely.
- Do not drain the old fluid until the fill opening has been successfully opened.
Step 4: Drain the old transmission fluid
- Place the drain pan rated 8 quarts minimum directly beneath the transmission drain plug.
- Insert the square drive of the 3/8-inch drive ratchet directly into the drain plug.
- Turn counterclockwise while pressing the ratchet firmly into the plug.
- Remove the plug by hand and allow the fluid to drain completely.

Step 5: Inspect and measure the old fluid
- Use the 1-quart graduated measuring container to measure the amount removed.
- Clean the magnetic drain plug with shop towels.
- A thin coating of gray metallic paste can be normal. Large chips, flakes or a strong burnt odor call for professional inspection before driving.
- Compare the drained amount with the specified refill quantity. A major shortage may indicate a leak.
Step 6: Install the drain plug
- Remove the old crush washer and install a new transmission drain-plug crush washer.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand until fully seated. This prevents damaging the aluminum transmission case.
- Use the torque wrench rated 10-80 ft-lbs with the 3/8-inch drive connection.
- Torque the drain plug to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
- Do not add extra force after the torque wrench clicks.
Step 7: Add new ATF DW-1
- Insert the long-neck funnel with flexible hose securely into the fill opening.
- Slowly add 2.3 US quarts (2.2 liters) of Honda ATF DW-1. carmanualsonline.info)
- Pause periodically so the fluid can flow into the case without backing up through the funnel.
- If the measured amount drained was significantly below 2.3 quarts, inspect for leakage rather than blindly overfilling.
- Slow pouring prevents an impressive red waterfall.
Step 8: Reinstall the fill plug and intake parts
- Remove the long-neck funnel with flexible hose and wipe away spilled fluid with shop towels.
- Inspect the fill plug seal and replace it if cut, hardened or swollen.
- Press the fill plug fully into place by hand.
- If the intake duct was moved, reinstall it using the 10mm socket.
- Confirm every intake hose, clamp and electrical connector is properly secured.
Step 9: Check for leaks
- Leave the lower splash shield removed temporarily.
- Make sure all tools are clear, then start the Insight and place it in Ready mode.
- Hold the brake pedal and select Reverse, Neutral and Drive for several seconds each, then return to Park.
- Turn the power system off and inspect the drain plug and fill area with the safety glasses and a flashlight if available.
- If fluid appears, shut the car down and correct the leak before reinstalling the shield.
Step 10: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the vehicle
- Use the Phillips screwdriver No. 2, flat-blade screwdriver, 10mm socket and plastic trim-clip removal tool to reinstall every shield fastener.
- Replace any broken underbody splash-shield clips.
- Use the floor jack rated 2 tons minimum to remove the stands one axle at a time.
- Lower the Insight carefully and remove the wheel chocks.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Test-drive the Insight gently for 10-15 minutes.
- ✅ Check for warning lights, unusual noise or vibration.
- ✅ Park on clean, level ground and inspect underneath for fresh fluid.
- ✅ Recheck the drain-plug area after the next two drives.
