🔧 Outback - Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

This repair replaces the automatic transmission fluid in your Outback’s 5-speed automatic transmission. Fresh fluid helps protect the transmission, improve shift quality, and reduce wear.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface only. Fluid level is checked by overflow height, so the vehicle must sit level.
  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid can be very hot. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ Never crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Use jack stands or ramps.
  • ⚠️ Do not confuse the front differential drain plug with the transmission drain plug. They use different fluids.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this fluid change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 17mm socket
  • 8mm hex bit socket
  • Torque wrench 10-80 Nm
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • Drain pan 10-quart minimum
  • Measuring jug 5-quart minimum
  • OBD scan tool with live transmission temperature data (specialty)
  • Infrared thermometer
  • Floor jack rated 3-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 3-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Subaru ATF-HP automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Automatic transmission drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
  • Automatic transmission fill plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Outback on a flat, level surface.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Raise the vehicle with a floor jack and support it evenly on jack stands. Keep the vehicle level front-to-back and side-to-side.
  • Let the transmission cool if recently driven. Warm fluid drains faster, but hot fluid can burn skin.
  • Connect an OBD scan tool that can read automatic transmission fluid temperature. A scan tool reads live data from the vehicle’s computers.
  • Use only Subaru ATF-HP type fluid. Do not use CVT fluid in your Outback.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the Correct Transmission Plugs

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the automatic transmission pan near the center of the vehicle.
  • The transmission drain plug is on the automatic transmission pan area. The front differential drain plug is farther forward and must not be removed for this job.
  • Use the 8mm hex bit socket to test-fit the transmission fill/check plug before draining. The fill/check plug must come loose first.
  • Always open the fill plug first.

Step 2: Loosen the Fill/Check Plug

  • Place the drain pan under the transmission area.
  • Use the 8mm hex bit socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the fill/check plug.
  • Do not fully remove it yet if fluid starts to seep out.
  • If the plug will not loosen, stop here. Do not drain the fluid until you know you can refill it.

Step 3: Drain the Old Transmission Fluid

  • Move the drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
  • Measure the drained fluid with the measuring jug. This gives you a safe starting refill amount.
  • Inspect the old fluid. Dark red or brown fluid is common. Burnt smell, metal chunks, or glitter-like debris can point to transmission wear.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Clean the drain plug with shop towels.
  • Install a new automatic transmission drain plug crush washer. A crush washer is a soft sealing washer that deforms slightly to prevent leaks.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench 10-80 Nm to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Add New Transmission Fluid

  • Remove the fill/check plug fully using the 8mm hex bit socket.
  • Install the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the fill/check opening. A fluid transfer pump pushes fluid into places where you cannot pour directly.
  • Pump in the same amount of Subaru ATF-HP automatic transmission fluid that drained out.
  • Typical drain-and-fill amount is about 4-5 quarts, but the correct amount is based on the level check.
  • Reinstall the fill/check plug loosely by hand.

Step 6: Warm the Transmission Fluid

  • Start the engine while the vehicle remains level and safely supported.
  • Keep your foot on the brake pedal.
  • Move the shifter slowly through each position: Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, then back to Park.
  • Pause 2-3 seconds in each gear to fill the transmission hydraulic circuits.
  • Use the OBD scan tool with live transmission temperature data to watch transmission fluid temperature.
  • If your scan tool cannot read transmission temperature, use the infrared thermometer on the transmission pan as a backup estimate.

Step 7: Set the Final Fluid Level

  • Keep the engine running, parking brake set, and transmission in Park.
  • Fluid level should be checked with the ATF warm, around 35-45°C (95-113°F).
  • Use the 8mm hex bit socket to remove the fill/check plug carefully.
  • If fluid pours out heavily, let it drain until it becomes a thin stream or steady drip.
  • If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump to add Subaru ATF-HP automatic transmission fluid until fluid just begins to run out of the fill/check hole.
  • The correct level is reached when fluid comes out as a small stream or steady drip at the correct temperature.
  • Level vehicle, warm fluid, engine running.

Step 8: Tighten the Fill/Check Plug

  • Install a new automatic transmission fill plug gasket.
  • Thread the fill/check plug in by hand first.
  • Use the 8mm hex bit socket and torque wrench 10-80 Nm to tighten the fill/check plug.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)
  • Wipe the transmission case clean with shop towels.

Step 9: Lower the Vehicle

  • Turn the engine off.
  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Outback and let it idle for 1 minute.
  • Shift slowly through all gear positions again, then return to Park.
  • Test drive gently for 10-15 minutes. Check for smooth shifts and normal operation.
  • Park on level ground and inspect underneath for leaks around the drain plug and fill/check plug.
  • Dispose of used automatic transmission fluid at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used oil.
  • No battery registration, coding, or infotainment reset is needed.
