This job replaces part of the automatic transmission fluid in your Tacoma by draining the pan and refilling it through the transmission fill plug. Your Tacoma uses a sealed-style Toyota automatic transmission, so fluid level must be checked at the correct fluid temperature.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Level the Truck
- Use the floor jack to lift your Tacoma high enough to work safely underneath.
- Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck gently onto them.
- Use wheel chocks to keep the truck from rolling.
- Make sure the truck sits level front-to-back and side-to-side.
- Level vehicle means accurate fluid level.
Step 2: Remove the Skid Plate if Equipped
- Use a 12mm socket if your Tacoma has skid plate bolts with 12mm heads.
- If equipped with smaller splash shield bolts, use a 10mm socket.
- Set the skid plate and bolts aside in order.
Step 3: Locate the Transmission Plugs
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Find the transmission pan under the truck.
- The drain plug is on the bottom of the pan.
- The overflow/check plug is also at the pan area and uses a small hex fitting.
- The fill plug is higher on the side of the transmission case.
Step 4: Remove the Fill Plug First
- Use a 24mm socket to loosen and remove the fill plug.
- This step proves you can refill the transmission before you drain it.
- Replace the old fill plug gasket with a new transmission fill plug gasket.
- Do not reinstall the fill plug yet.
- Always open fill before drain.
Step 5: Drain the Old Fluid
- Place the 8-quart drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
- Use a 14mm socket to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
- Measure the drained fluid amount using the markings on the drain pan or a clean measuring container.
- Install a new transmission drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
- Use the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive and 14mm socket to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Add New Transmission Fluid
- Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the fill opening.
- Pump in the same amount of Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid that drained out.
- Add about 0.25 quart extra so fluid can spill from the overflow during the level check.
- Temporarily install the fill plug by hand with the new gasket.
Step 7: Warm the Transmission Fluid
- Connect the OBD scan tool with transmission temperature data to the diagnostic port under the dashboard.
- Start the engine and keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
- Move the shifter slowly through each gear position, pausing 3 seconds in each position.
- Return the shifter to Park and leave the engine idling.
- Watch the transmission fluid temperature on the scan tool.
- The target fluid temperature for level checking is about 104-113°F (40-45°C).
Step 8: Check the Fluid Level
- With the engine idling and the transmission at 104-113°F (40-45°C), place the drain pan under the overflow plug.
- Use a 5mm hex socket to remove the overflow/check plug.
- If fluid flows out in a steady stream, wait until it becomes a thin trickle.
- If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump to add Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid through the fill opening until fluid trickles from the overflow hole.
- Install a new transmission overflow plug gasket.
- Use the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive and 5mm hex socket to tighten the overflow plug to Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Tighten the Fill Plug
- Stop the engine after the overflow plug is tightened.
- Use the 24mm socket to remove and inspect the fill plug gasket if needed.
- Install the fill plug with the new gasket.
- Use the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive and 24mm socket to tighten the fill plug to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the Skid Plate
- Lift the skid plate into position by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket as equipped to tighten the skid plate bolts snugly.
- If using a torque wrench, tighten small splash shield bolts to Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) and larger skid plate bolts to Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Lower the Truck
- Use the floor jack to lift your Tacoma slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
