🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Level the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift your RAV4 at the approved front jacking point.
• Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the approved support points.
• Use the floor jack to raise the rear if needed so the vehicle sits level.
• Confirm the vehicle is stable before getting underneath.
• Shake gently before crawling under.

Step 2: Remove the Underbody Cover

• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the underbody cover fasteners blocking access to the transmission pan area.
• Set the cover and fasteners aside in order.
• If clips are present, remove them carefully by hand to avoid breaking them.

Step 3: Find the Fill Plug First

• Locate the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission case.
• Use a 24mm socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to carefully loosen the fill plug.
• Do not drain the fluid until you know the fill plug can be removed.
• Always open fill before drain.

Step 4: Drain the Old Fluid

• Place the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the transmission drain plug.
• Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the transmission drain plug.
• Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
• Measure the amount drained if possible. This helps estimate the refill amount.
• Remove and discard the old transmission drain plug gasket.

Step 5: Remove the Overflow Tube

• The overflow tube is a small internal tube that sets the correct fluid height during the final level check.
• Use a 6mm hex socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the overflow tube through the drain opening.
• Allow the remaining fluid to drain into the drain pan (8-quart minimum).
• Inspect the overflow tube threads and clean it with shop rags.

Step 6: Reinstall the Overflow Tube

• Use the 6mm hex socket to reinstall the overflow tube by hand first.
• Tighten it gently using the torque wrench (inch-pound).
• Torque to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs).
• Do not overtighten. The tube is small and can be damaged.

Step 7: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Install a new transmission drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
• Use the 14mm socket to thread the drain plug in by hand first.
• Use the torque wrench (foot-pound) to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Add New Transmission Fluid

• Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump (specialty) into the fill opening.
• Pump in new Toyota ATF WS automatic transmission fluid.
• Add about the same amount that drained out, then add a small extra amount for level checking.
• Typical drain-and-fill amount is about 3 to 4 quarts, but the final level check is what matters.
• Temporarily reinstall the fill plug by hand using the 24mm socket, but do not final-torque it yet.

Step 9: Warm the Transmission Fluid

• Connect the OBD-II scan tool with live data (specialty) to the diagnostic port under the driver side of the dash.
• Start the engine while your RAV4 remains level and safely supported.
• With your foot firmly on the brake, move the shifter slowly through P, R, N, D, then back to P.
• Pause about 3 seconds in each position.
• Use the OBD-II scan tool with live data (specialty) to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
• Target fluid temperature for level checking is approximately 35-45°C (95-113°F).

Step 10: Check the Fluid Level

• Keep the engine idling with the transmission in Park.
• Place the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the drain/check plug.
• Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain/check plug only.
• Do not remove the overflow tube during this level check.
• If fluid flows out in a thin steady stream, let it drain until it becomes a slow drip.
• If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump (specialty) to add fluid through the fill port until fluid begins to flow from the check opening.
• When the fluid becomes a slow drip at the correct temperature, the level is set.
• A slow drip is the goal.

Step 11: Reinstall the Check Plug

• Install a new transmission overflow/check plug gasket on the plug.
• Use the 14mm socket to thread the plug in by hand.
• Use the torque wrench (foot-pound) to tighten the plug.
• Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Tighten the Fill Plug

• Install a new transmission fill plug gasket on the fill plug.
• Use the 24mm socket to thread the fill plug in by hand.
• Use the torque wrench (foot-pound) to tighten the fill plug.
• Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Clean and Reinstall the Underbody Cover

• Use brake cleaner and shop rags to clean any spilled transmission fluid from the case and pan area.
• Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the underbody cover fasteners.
• Tighten the small underbody fasteners snugly. Do not overtighten plastic shields.

Step 14: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
• Remove the jack stands.
• Lower your RAV4 slowly to the ground.
• Remove the wheel chocks.

• ✅ Shift through all gear positions again with your foot on the brake.
• ✅ Take a gentle test drive for 5-10 minutes.
