- 📍 Connect the OBD-II scan tool before draining. Confirm that it can display automatic transmission fluid temperature, commonly shown as “A/T Oil Temperature.”
- 📍 Drive for approximately 10 minutes, then allow the transmission to cool. The final fluid-level check must occur at 35-45°C (95-113°F).
- 📍 Measure all drained fluid. This provides a safe starting amount for the refill.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and level the vehicle
- Place the wheel chocks securely against the rear tires.
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at Toyota-approved lifting points, then lower your Highlander onto four 2-ton jack stands.
- Use the 12-inch level tool to confirm the vehicle is level in both directions.
- Push firmly on the body before going underneath. The vehicle must remain stable.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield
- Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and plastic trim-clip removal tool to remove the fasteners blocking access to the transmission.
- Arrange the fasteners in removal order because their positions may differ.
- Take a photo before removing mixed fasteners.
Step 3: Loosen the fill plug first
- Locate the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission case.
- Clean around it with shop towels so dirt cannot enter the transmission.
- Use the 10mm hex-bit socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen and remove the fill plug.
- Do not drain the transmission until the fill plug can be removed. Otherwise, you could drain fluid without being able to refill it.
Step 4: Drain and measure the old fluid
- Position the 6-quart drain pan beneath the transmission drain plug.
- Use the 10mm hex-bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug slowly.
- Allow the fluid to drain until it becomes a slow drip.
- Transfer the old fluid into the graduated measuring container and record the exact amount.
- Inspect the fluid for metallic glitter, large particles, or a strong burned smell. Heavy debris or slipping symptoms require professional diagnosis rather than another fluid change.
Step 5: Drain the overflow passage
- Look through the drain opening for the plastic overflow tube. This tube establishes the transmission’s operating fluid level.
- Use the 6mm hex-bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the overflow tube carefully.
- Allow the remaining fluid to drain and add this quantity to your measurement.
- Inspect the plastic tube for cracks or damaged threads. Replace it if damaged.
Step 6: Reinstall the overflow tube and drain plug
- Thread the overflow tube in by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 6mm hex-bit socket and torque wrench to tighten the overflow tube to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs). Do not overtighten the plastic tube.
- Install a new sealing washer on the drain plug.
- Use the 10mm hex-bit socket and torque wrench to install the drain plug temporarily to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Add the initial fluid quantity
- Insert the flexible hose from the transmission-fluid transfer pump into the fill opening.
- Use the transfer pump to add the measured drained quantity of Toyota Genuine ATF WS, then add approximately 0.4 US quart (0.4 liter) extra for the level-setting procedure.
- Install the old fill plug finger-tight with the 10mm hex-bit socket. It will be removed again after the level check.
- Clean any spilled fluid with shop towels.
Step 8: Circulate the new fluid
- Confirm that the parking brake is applied and all four wheels are securely supported.
- Connect the OBD-II scan tool and display the automatic transmission fluid temperature.
- Start the engine and keep it idling. Do not raise engine speed.
- With your foot firmly on the brake pedal, move the selector slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing approximately three seconds in each position.
- Repeat the shift sequence twice, then return the selector to Park.
Step 9: Set the fluid level at the correct temperature
- Watch the scan tool until the fluid temperature reaches 35-45°C (95-113°F).
- Leave the engine running and your Highlander level.
- Place the drain pan underneath the drain plug.
- Use the 10mm hex-bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove only the outer drain plug. Do not remove the internal overflow tube.
- If fluid exits in a steady stream, wait until it becomes a thin trickle or rapid drip.
- If no fluid exits, reinstall the drain plug temporarily. Use the transfer pump to add ATF WS through the fill opening in approximately 0.2-quart increments, then repeat the overflow check.
- The level is correct when a thin stream changes to a slow drip within the specified temperature range.
- If the temperature exceeds 45°C (113°F), reinstall the plugs, shut off the engine, allow the fluid to cool, and repeat this step.
Step 10: Tighten the transmission plugs
- With the level correctly set, install a new sealing washer on the drain plug.
- Use the 10mm hex-bit socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Shut off the engine.
- Install a new sealing washer on the fill plug.
- Use the 10mm hex-bit socket and torque wrench to tighten the fill plug to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the transmission case clean with shop towels so future leakage is easy to identify.
Step 11: Reinstall the splash shield
- Position the lower splash shield using both hands.
- Start every fastener by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the bolts without overtightening them.
- Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the reusable clips.
Step 12: Lower the vehicle
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to lift each end slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Highlander carefully onto level ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks only after the vehicle is fully lowered.
