🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

• Position the 2-ton floor jack at a proper front lifting point.
• Raise the XT4 only high enough to gain safe access underneath.
• Place the 2-ton jack stands under the reinforced front support points.
• Lower the XT4 onto the stands, then gently push the body to verify stability.
• Never trust the hydraulic jack alone.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Access Panel

• Wear the safety glasses before working beneath the vehicle.
• Use the 7mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the small panel screws.
• Use the 10mm socket for any larger fasteners fitted to the panel.
• Use the trim clip removal tool for plastic push clips. This fork-shaped tool lifts clips without snapping them.
• Support the panel with one hand while removing its final fastener.

Step 3: Drain the Old Engine Oil

• Place the 8-quart drain pan beneath the drain plug, allowing room for the initial stream to travel outward.
• Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
• Finish removing the plug by hand while pushing it lightly toward the pan. Pull it away quickly when the threads release.
• Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip, normally about 5-10 minutes.
• Clean the drain plug with shop towels and replace its sealing washer.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Thread the drain plug into the oil pan entirely by hand. Stop immediately if it doesn’t turn smoothly.
• Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten it.

• Wipe the surrounding area clean so any new leak will be easy to spot.

Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter

• Move the 8-quart drain pan beneath the spin-on oil filter.
• Use the oil filter strap wrench to turn the old filter counterclockwise.
• Once loose, remove the filter by hand while keeping its open end upright.
• Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.
• Wipe the engine’s filter mounting surface clean with shop towels.

Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter

• Apply a thin film of fresh SAE 0W-20 oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
• Thread the new filter clockwise by hand until its gasket touches the mounting surface.
• Tighten the filter approximately another three-quarters of a turn by hand.
• Don’t use the oil filter strap wrench to tighten the new filter unless its manufacturer specifically provides a torque specification.

Step 7: Refit the Lower Panel

• Lift the panel into place and start every fastener by hand.
• Install plastic clips using your fingers and the trim clip removal tool as needed.
• Use the 7mm socket for the small screws and the 10mm socket for larger bolts.
• Tighten the panel fasteners only until snug. They thread into lightweight retainers.

Step 8: Lower the XT4

• Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise the XT4 slightly off the stands.
• Remove both 2-ton jack stands.
• Lower the XT4 slowly to level ground, then remove the floor jack.

Step 9: Refill the Engine

• Remove the oil filler cap and insert the long-neck oil funnel.
• Initially add approximately 4.7 L (5.0 US quarts) of SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic dexos1 oil.
• Wait one minute, remove the funnel, and reinstall the filler cap.
• Start the engine and let it idle for approximately 30 seconds. Don’t rev it.
• Confirm that the oil-pressure warning light switches off promptly.
• Shut the engine off and inspect the drain plug and filter for leakage.

Step 10: Set the Final Oil Level

• Leave the XT4 on level ground with the engine off for at least 15 minutes before making the final warm-engine check.
• Remove the dipstick, wipe it with a shop towel, reinstall it fully, and remove it again.
• Add oil in approximately 100-200 mL increments through the long-neck oil funnel.
• Stop when the level is within the dipstick’s cross-hatched operating area.

Step 11: Reset the Engine Oil-Life System
