🔧 Tahoe - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
This service removes contaminated engine oil and replaces the oil filter. Your Tahoe requires eight quarts of SAE 0W-20 oil when the filter is changed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool before working underneath your Tahoe.
- 🛑 Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
- 🧤 Used engine oil can irritate skin; wear nitrile gloves.
- 🔥 Run the engine only briefly before draining—the oil should be warm, not dangerously hot.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
- ♻️ Collect all used oil and take it to an authorized recycling facility.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Full-synthetic engine oil meeting dexos1 specification, SAE 0W-20 - Qty: 8 quarts
- Engine oil filter compatible with the 5.3L V8 - Qty: 1
- Engine oil drain plug seal - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚙 Park your Tahoe on level, solid ground and apply the parking brake.
- 🛞 Place the wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
- 🌡️ Run the engine for two to three minutes, then switch it off and wait five minutes.
- 📖 A torque wrench is a tool that tightens a fastener to an exact specified force.
- 📦 Confirm that the new filter’s sealing gasket is present and undamaged.
- 🧮 Keep the eighth quart available for final level adjustment rather than pouring blindly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the Front of the Tahoe
- Place the vehicle ramps directly in front of the front tires.
- Drive slowly onto the ramps until both tires are centered on top.
- Apply the parking brake, switch off the engine, and place the wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
- Push firmly on your Tahoe to verify that it is stable before going underneath.
Step 2: Open the Oil Fill Point
- Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
- Pull out the engine oil dipstick by hand and wipe it with a shop towel.
- Opening the cap helps the old oil drain smoothly.
Step 3: Drain the Used Engine Oil
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves, then move underneath using the mechanic’s creeper.
- Position the 10-quart drain pan beneath the oil-pan drain plug. Allow room for the oil stream to travel outward initially.
- Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
- Finish removing the plug carefully by hand and let the oil drain completely.
- Wait until the oil has slowed to an occasional drip, normally about 10 minutes.
Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Clean the drain plug and the sealing surface on the oil pan with shop towels.
- Install the new drain plug seal, then thread the plug clockwise by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the plug to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the plug; the oil pan threads can be damaged.
Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter
- Move the drain pan beneath the oil filter, which is mounted vertically near the rear underside of the engine.
- Use the adjustable strap-style oil filter wrench to turn the filter counterclockwise.
- Once loose, remove the filter by hand while keeping it upright.
- Check the engine’s filter mounting surface. Make sure the old rubber gasket did not remain stuck to it.
- Wipe the mounting surface clean with a shop towel.
- A doubled filter gasket causes a major oil leak.
Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter
- Apply a thin film of fresh SAE 0W-20 oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
- Thread the new filter clockwise onto the mounting stud by hand.
- When the gasket first touches the mounting surface, tighten the filter by hand another three-quarters to one full turn.
- Do not use the filter wrench to tighten the new filter.
Step 7: Add Fresh Engine Oil
- Place the long-neck automotive funnel in the oil fill opening.
- Pour in seven quarts of SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic oil meeting the dexos1 specification.
- Add approximately three-quarters of the eighth quart, then remove the funnel.
- Install the oil filler cap clockwise by hand until secure.
- Insert the dipstick fully.
Step 8: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks
- Verify that no tools remain in the engine compartment or underneath your Tahoe.
- Start the engine and confirm that the oil-pressure warning goes out within a few seconds.
- Let the engine idle for approximately 30 seconds; do not rev it.
- Switch off the engine and inspect the drain plug and oil filter for leaks using a flashlight-free visual check from beside the vehicle.
- Do not crawl under your Tahoe while the engine is running.
Step 9: Lower the Vehicle and Set the Oil Level
- Remove the wheel chocks by hand and carefully reverse your Tahoe off the ramps onto level ground.
- Reapply the parking brake, switch off the engine, and wait five minutes.
- Remove the dipstick by hand, wipe it with a shop towel, insert it fully, and remove it again.
- Add small amounts of the remaining SAE 0W-20 oil through the long-neck funnel until the level reaches the upper crosshatched mark.
- Do not fill above the upper mark. Total capacity with a filter change is approximately 8.0 US quarts (7.6 liters).
- Reinstall the dipstick and oil filler cap securely by hand.
Step 10: Reset the Engine Oil Life System
- Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the steering-wheel controls to open Driver Information Center > Info > Oil Life.
- Press and hold the check-mark button until the display resets to 100%.
- Switch the ignition off, restart the engine, and verify that the oil-life display remains at 100%.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Verify that the oil-pressure warning stays off with the engine running.
- 🔍 Recheck the drain plug and filter area for leakage after a short drive.
- 📏 Park on level ground and check the dipstick again after the engine has been off for at least five minutes.
- ♻️ Pour the used oil into a sealed container and recycle it with the old filter.
- 📝 Record the service date and odometer reading for maintenance history.
