🔧 CX-5 - Engine Oil and Filter Replacement

This is a solid beginner job. Drain the old oil, replace the spin-on filter and drain-plug washer, then refill with SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic oil. Mazda lists approximately 4.5 L (4.8 US quarts) with a new filter, but the dipstick makes the final decision.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes

Assumption: These specifications apply to your stock U.S.-market, naturally aspirated 2.5L CX-5.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level, solid ground. Never crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool for about 15 minutes. Warm oil drains well, but hot oil burns skin.
  • ⚠️ Support the front at the approved lift points with properly rated jack stands or drive-on ramps.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Used engine oil is a skin irritant.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key away from the vehicle so nobody starts the engine while you’re underneath.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection isn’t required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3-ton floor jack
  • 3-ton jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • 8mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3/8-inch torque wrench rated 10-80 ft-lbs
  • 64mm 14-flute oil-filter socket
  • 6-quart drain pan
  • Long-neck oil funnel
  • Plastic trim-clip tool
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

A torque wrench clicks when a fastener reaches its specified tightness. Stop pulling at the first click.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic engine oil meeting current API and ILSAC standards - Qty: 5 US quarts
  • Spin-on engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain-plug crush washer - Qty: 1

The matching oil-filter aisle is open beside this guide. Avoid transmission filters shown in that aisle. They’re unrelated to this job.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park on level ground, select Park, engage the parking brake, and chock both rear wheels.
  • 📋 Run the engine for two or three minutes if it’s completely cold, then switch it off and wait about 15 minutes.
  • 📋 Open the hood and loosen the oil-filler cap. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
  • 📋 Confirm that the new filter’s rubber sealing gasket is present and undamaged.
  • 📋 Don’t reset the maintenance reminder until the oil level and leak check pass.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front

  • Place the wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack at the front-center lifting point.
  • Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points, then lower the CX-5 onto them.
  • Push the body gently before going underneath. It must feel completely stable.

Step 2: Open the oil-service access panel

  • Use the 8mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and plastic trim-clip tool to remove the small service panel beneath the engine.
  • Keep the fasteners together so none disappear under the workbench. That’s where fasteners go to start new lives.
  • Position the 6-quart drain pan beneath the drain plug, slightly toward the rear because the oil initially travels outward.

Step 3: Drain the old engine oil

  • Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
  • Finish removing the plug by hand while pressing it lightly against the oil pan, then pull it away quickly.
  • Allow the oil to drain until it slows to an occasional drip, usually 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove the old crush washer from the plug and wipe the plug clean with a shop towel.

Step 4: Install the drain plug

  • Fit one new oil drain-plug crush washer onto the cleaned plug.
  • Thread the plug clockwise by hand until the washer touches the oil pan. If it won’t turn easily, stop and restart it to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten it to 30-41 Nm (23-30 ft-lbs). Use approximately 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs) as a practical target within that range.
  • One click is enough.

Step 5: Remove the old oil filter

  • Reposition the 6-quart drain pan below the vertically mounted oil filter.
  • Use the 64mm 14-flute oil-filter socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to turn the filter counterclockwise.
  • Once loose, unscrew it by hand and keep it upright while lowering it into the drain pan.
  • Use a shop towel to confirm that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter. Two stacked gaskets can cause a major leak.

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Apply a thin film of fresh 0W-20 oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
  • Thread the filter clockwise by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
  • Tighten it by hand approximately three-quarters of a turn beyond gasket contact, or follow the tightening instructions printed on the filter.
  • If tightening by torque specification with the 64mm 14-flute oil-filter socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench, use 12-16 Nm (9-12 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Refill the engine

  • Lower the CX-5 until it sits level before making the final oil-level measurement.
  • Remove the oil-filler cap and insert the long-neck oil funnel.
  • Pour in approximately 4.3 L (4.5 US quarts) of SAE 0W-20 initially.
  • Wait two minutes, remove the dipstick, wipe it with a shop towel, fully reinsert it, then check again.
  • Add oil in small amounts until the level approaches the upper mark. The approximate total with a filter is 4.5 L (4.8 US quarts). Don’t dump in all five quarts.
  • Install the oil-filler cap securely.

Step 8: Start the engine and inspect

  • Start the engine and confirm the red oil-pressure warning goes out within a few seconds.
  • Let the engine idle for 30-60 seconds while inspecting the drain plug and filter for leaks.
  • Switch the engine off immediately if the oil-pressure warning stays on or oil leaks rapidly.
  • Wait five minutes, then recheck the dipstick on level ground. Add small amounts only if needed.

Step 9: Reinstall the access panel

  • Use the 8mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and plastic trim-clip tool to reinstall the service panel and its fasteners.
  • Tighten the small panel fasteners only until snug. They thread into lightweight retainers and are easy to strip.

Step 10: Reset the maintenance monitor

  • Switch the ignition on and use the center display controller.
  • Select Applications > Vehicle Status Monitor > Maintenance.
  • Open the oil-change setting and select Reset.
  • If scheduled maintenance was performed at the same time, reset that item separately. Mazda says the engine-oil data must be reset after every oil change.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check underneath the CX-5 again after a short drive and after it sits overnight.
  • ✅ Verify the oil level the next morning on level ground with the engine cold.
  • ✅ Keep the oil between the dipstick marks. Never operate the engine above the upper mark.
  • ✅ Pour the used oil into a sealed container and take it with the old filter to an authorized recycling facility.
  • ✅ Mazda’s U.S. schedule allows flexible servicing up to one year or 7,500 miles, but dusty, very hot, short-trip, or extended-idle use calls for more frequent fixed servicing.
