🔧 Elantra - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the spin-on oil filter, and refills your Elantra with fresh oil. Regular oil changes reduce internal engine wear and help prevent sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes

Oil specification: SAE 5W-20 full synthetic meeting API SP and ILSAC GF-6A | Refill capacity with filter: approximately 4.0 L (4.2 US qt)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool until the exhaust and oil pan are warm, not hot. Hot oil can cause severe burns.
  • Work on firm, level pavement. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Use both drive-on ramps and wheel chocks before getting underneath your Elantra.
  • Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves because used engine oil can irritate skin.
  • Do not overfill the engine. Excess oil can damage the catalytic converter and internal seals.
  • Battery disconnection is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Low-profile drive-on ramps rated 2-ton minimum
  • Rubber wheel chocks rated 2-ton minimum
  • 17mm six-point socket
  • 3/8-inch-drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench rated 10-80 ft-lbs
  • Adjustable 64-80mm oil-filter wrench
  • 8-quart sealable oil drain pan
  • Automotive funnel with 1-inch outlet
  • 10mm socket
  • Plastic trim-clip removal tool
  • Clean lint-free shop towels
  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • SAE 5W-20 full-synthetic engine oil meeting API SP and ILSAC GF-6A - Qty: 5 US quarts
  • Spin-on engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain-plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Run the engine for three to five minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains more completely.
  • Place your Elantra in neutral, apply the parking brake firmly, and switch off the ignition.
  • Center the front wheels on the ramps and drive up slowly. Place the wheel chocks tightly behind both rear tires.
  • Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap and yellow engine-oil dipstick.
  • No infotainment service mode, scan tool, coding, or battery disconnection is needed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Oil Filler

  • Put on the ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
  • Use your gloved hand to turn the oil filler cap counterclockwise and remove it.
  • Use a clean lint-free shop towel to wipe around the filler opening so dirt cannot fall inside.
  • Pull the yellow dipstick out slightly to let air enter while the old oil drains.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Access Cover

  • Look beneath the front of the engine for the oil-service opening or lower splash shield.
  • If the shield blocks access, use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove its bolts.
  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool to lift any reusable plastic clips without breaking them.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in their installed order.

Step 3: Drain the Old Oil

  • Position the 8-quart sealable oil drain pan beneath the oil-pan drain plug. Allow room for the oil stream to travel outward.
  • Use the 17mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
  • Finish removing the plug with your gloved hand while keeping inward pressure on it, then pull it away quickly.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip, usually five to ten minutes.
  • Move the pan as the oil stream shortens.

Step 4: Install the Drain Plug

  • Use a clean lint-free shop towel to wipe the drain plug and the sealing surface on the oil pan.
  • Remove the old crush washer and place the new crush washer on the drain plug.
  • Thread the plug clockwise by hand until fully seated. If it does not turn easily, back it out and restart to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use the 17mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the plug to Torque to 34-44 Nm (25-33 ft-lbs). Aim for the middle of that range, about 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the Oil Filter

  • Move the 8-quart sealable oil drain pan directly under the spin-on oil filter.
  • Use the adjustable 64-80mm oil-filter wrench to turn the old filter counterclockwise until loose. An oil-filter wrench grips a filter that is too tight to remove by hand.
  • Finish unscrewing the filter with your gloved hand. Keep it upright because it contains oil.
  • Check that the old rubber filter gasket came off with the filter. A gasket left on the engine will cause a major leak.
  • Use a clean lint-free shop towel to wipe the filter mounting surface.

Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Apply a thin film of fresh 5W-20 engine oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved fingertip.
  • Thread the new filter clockwise by hand until its gasket first contacts the mounting surface.
  • Tighten the filter approximately three-quarters of one additional turn by hand.
  • If using the 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench with a suitable filter-wrench grip, tighten to Torque to 12-16 Nm (9-12 ft-lbs). Do not exceed the filter manufacturer’s printed specification.
  • Do not use the adjustable oil-filter wrench for extra tightening unless needed to reach the specified torque.

Step 7: Reinstall the Lower Cover

  • Use clean lint-free shop towels to remove spilled oil from the oil pan, filter area, and splash shield.
  • Position the lower splash shield in its original location.
  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the reusable clips.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to reinstall the shield bolts snugly. Do not overtighten plastic-mounted fasteners.

Step 8: Lower the Vehicle

  • Confirm that no tools or the 8-quart sealable oil drain pan remain under your Elantra.
  • Remove the rubber wheel chocks from behind the rear tires.
  • Drive slowly backward off the low-profile drive-on ramps and park on level ground.
  • Apply the parking brake and leave the transmission in neutral.

Step 9: Add Fresh Engine Oil

  • Place the automotive funnel with 1-inch outlet in the oil filler opening.
  • Pour in approximately 3.8 L (4.0 US qt) of SAE 5W-20 engine oil first.
  • Remove the funnel and install the oil filler cap clockwise by hand until secure.
  • Fully insert the dipstick, remove it, and read both sides. The level should be between the low and full marks.
  • Add oil through the automotive funnel in 100-200 mL increments until the level approaches the full mark. Total capacity is approximately 4.0 L (4.2 US qt) with a new filter.
  • Do not pour in the entire 5-quart container.

Step 10: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

  • Start the engine and confirm that the red oil-pressure warning light turns off within a few seconds.
  • If the warning light remains on, shut the engine off immediately and verify the oil level, filter, and drain plug.
  • Let the engine idle for approximately 30 seconds.
  • Use the safety glasses and a clean lint-free shop towel while visually checking beneath the engine for leakage. Do not reach near moving or hot components.
  • Switch the engine off and wait five minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.

Step 11: Set the Final Oil Level

  • Use a clean lint-free shop towel to wipe the dipstick.
  • Insert the dipstick fully, remove it again, and check both sides.
  • If necessary, use the automotive funnel to add small amounts of 5W-20 oil until the reading reaches the full mark without going above it.
  • Use your gloved hand to reinstall the dipstick fully and tighten the oil filler cap securely.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the drain-plug and oil-filter areas again after the first drive and the following morning.
  • Record the date and odometer reading for the next service.
  • For normal driving, Hyundai’s typical interval is 7,500 miles or 12 months. Severe use may require service every 3,750 miles or six months.
  • Severe use includes repeated short trips, heavy traffic, dusty roads, extreme temperatures, or prolonged idling.
  • Pour the used oil into the sealable drain pan and take it with the old filter to an authorized recycling or oil-collection facility. Never pour oil onto the ground or into a drain.
