๐Ÿ”ง Pathfinder - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Pathfinder with fresh SAE 0W-20 oil. Regular oil changes protect the 3.5L V6 from wear and help prevent sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes

Oil capacity with filter: Approximately 4.8 liters (5.1 US quarts)

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Work on a level, solid surface and never get underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Let the engine cool until the exhaust and oil pan are warm, not hot.
  • ๐Ÿงค Wear gloves and safety glasses because used oil can irritate skin.
  • ๐Ÿš™ Engage the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnection is not required for this service.
  • โ™ป๏ธ Keep used oil away from children and animals, then take it to an authorized recycling facility.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8-inch-drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm
  • 65mm 14-flute oil filter socket (specialty)
  • Plastic trim-clip removal tool
  • Oil drain pan rated 8-liter minimum
  • Automotive funnel with narrow spout
  • Vehicle ramps rated 2-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks rated 2-ton minimum
  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • ANSI-rated safety glasses

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic engine oil meeting API SP - Qty: 6 US quarts or 6 liters
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain-plug crush washer - Qty: 1
  • Absorbent shop towels - Qty: 1 pack

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • ๐Ÿš™ Park your Pathfinder on level pavement, shift into Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Run the engine for about three minutes, then switch it off and wait five minutes. Warm oil drains more easily.
  • ๐Ÿ›ž Place the wheel chocks behind both rear tires, then carefully drive the front wheels onto the vehicle ramps.
  • ๐Ÿ”’ Confirm both front tires are centered on the ramps before going underneath.
  • ๐Ÿ“– A crush washer is the soft metal sealing ring fitted beneath the drain-plug head; replace it at every oil change.
  • ๐Ÿงฐ An oil filter socket is a cup-shaped specialty tool that fits over the end of the filter for removal.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Oil Filler

  • Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine.
  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand and set it on a clean shop towel.
  • Pull out the yellow-handled dipstick by hand, wipe it clean, and reinstall it fully.
  • Opening the cap helps the oil drain smoothly.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Access Panel

  • Put on the nitrile mechanic gloves and ANSI-rated safety glasses.
  • Position the 8-liter drain pan underneath the engine oil-pan area.
  • If the lower splash shield blocks access, use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove its bolts.
  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool to release any retaining clips without breaking them.
  • Set the panel, clips, and bolts aside in an organized location.

Step 3: Drain the Old Engine Oil

  • Move the drain pan directly below the oil-pan drain plug, allowing room for the oil stream to travel outward.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
  • Finish removing the plug carefully by hand and allow the oil to drain completely for at least five minutes.
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and wipe the plug clean with a shop towel.
  • Inspect the plug threads. Stop if they are stripped or heavily damaged.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Install one new crush washer onto the cleaned drain plug.
  • Thread the plug into the oil pan clockwise by hand until fully seated. It should turn easily without binding.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to torque the drain plug to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the surrounding oil-pan surface clean with a shop towel.
  • Never use an impact wrench on the drain plug.

Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Reposition the drain pan below the oil filter because additional oil will spill during removal.
  • Fit the 65mm 14-flute oil filter socket over the filter.
  • Use the 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to turn the filter counterclockwise until loose, then remove it by hand.
  • Confirm the old rubber filter gasket came off with the filter. A gasket stuck to the engine can cause a major leak.
  • Wipe the engine's filter-mounting surface clean with a shop towel.

Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Apply a thin film of fresh 0W-20 engine oil to the new filter's rubber gasket using a gloved fingertip.
  • Thread the new filter clockwise onto the mounting stud by hand.
  • After the gasket first touches the mounting surface, tighten the filter approximately two-thirds of a turn by hand.
  • If using the 65mm 14-flute oil filter socket and torque wrench, torque the oil filter to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • Do not use both tightening methods. Stop after either hand tightening or torque tightening.

Step 7: Reinstall the Lower Access Panel

  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the reusable retaining clips.
  • Install the splash-shield bolts by hand, then snug them evenly using the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet.
  • Do not overtighten the small shield fasteners because the plastic mounting points can crack.

Step 8: Add Fresh Engine Oil

  • Place the automotive funnel into the oil-filler opening.
  • Pour approximately 4.5 liters (4.8 US quarts) of SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic oil through the funnel.
  • Remove the funnel and install the oil filler cap clockwise by hand.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for approximately 30 seconds. Confirm the red oil-pressure warning light turns off promptly.
  • Switch off the engine and wait at least five minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan.

Step 9: Set the Final Oil Level

  • Carefully drive your Pathfinder off the ramps and park it on level ground.
  • Remove the dipstick by hand, wipe it with a shop towel, reinstall it fully, and remove it again.
  • Check that the oil level is between the low and high marks, preferably near the high mark.
  • Use the automotive funnel to add oil in 100-200 milliliter increments, checking the dipstick after each addition.
  • The total fill with a new filter is approximately 4.8 liters (5.1 US quarts). Do not overfill.

Step 10: Reset the Oil Maintenance Reminder

  • Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the steering-wheel arrow and OK buttons to open Settings > Maintenance > Oil and Filter in the instrument display.
  • Select Reset, then confirm with the OK button.
  • If your display shows a maintenance distance setting, select the interval specified by your Nissan maintenance schedule.

โœ… After Repair

  • ๐Ÿ” Start the engine and inspect the drain plug and oil filter for leaks while the engine idles.
  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Switch the engine off immediately if the oil-pressure warning light stays illuminated or oil leaks rapidly.
  • ๐Ÿ“ After five minutes on level ground, check the dipstick again and correct the level if necessary.
  • ๐Ÿงน Pour the used oil into a sealed container and take the oil and old filter to an authorized recycling facility.
  • ๐Ÿ”Ž Recheck the oil level and inspect for seepage after the first short drive.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Record the service date and odometer reading for future maintenance.
