• Park your Civic on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• If the car was just driven, wait until the transmission and exhaust are warm, not hot.
• A crush washer is a soft sealing washer that compresses when tightened. Replace it so the plug does not leak.
• A fluid transfer pump is a small hand pump used to move new fluid from the bottle into the transmission fill hole.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Support the Front

• Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Civic at the front center jacking point.
• Place jack stands under the front side support points.
• Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
• Keep the vehicle as level as possible for proper fluid filling.
• Shake the car gently to confirm stability.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower cover bolts.
• Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove any plastic clips holding the cover.
• Set the cover, bolts, and clips aside in order.

Step 3: Locate the Fill and Drain Plugs

• From underneath, locate the manual transmission case on the driver-side area of the engine bay.
• The fill plug is higher on the transmission case.
• The drain plug is lower on the transmission case.
• Clean around both plugs with shop towels before opening them.

Step 4: Remove the Fill Plug First

• Use a 17mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension if needed to loosen the fill plug.
• Remove the fill plug and old crush washer.
• If the fill plug will not come loose, stop. Do not drain the transmission until the fill plug is removable.
• This prevents getting stuck with an empty transmission.

Step 5: Drain the Old Fluid

• Place the drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
• Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
• Let the fluid drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
• Inspect the drain plug magnet for metal fuzz. A light paste is normal; chunks are not.

Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Wipe the drain plug clean with shop towels.
• Install a new manual transmission drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
• Thread the plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a torque wrench and 17mm socket to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Fill with New Manual Transmission Fluid

• Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the fill opening.
• Pump in Honda manual transmission fluid slowly.
• Fill until fluid just begins to trickle out of the fill hole while the vehicle is level.
• The service amount is typically just under 2 quarts, but the correct level is reached when fluid trickles from the fill hole.
• Go slowly near the end to avoid overfilling.

Step 8: Reinstall the Fill Plug

• Install a new manual transmission fill plug crush washer on the fill plug.
• Thread the fill plug in by hand first.
• Use a torque wrench and 17mm socket to tighten the fill plug to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
• Wipe the transmission case clean with shop towels.

Step 9: Reinstall the Lower Engine Cover

• Position the lower engine cover back in place.
• Use the plastic trim clip remover by hand to reinstall plastic clips if removed.
• Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the lower cover bolts until snug.
• Do not overtighten the small cover bolts.

Step 10: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack to raise your Civic slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands.
• Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
• Remove the wheel chocks.

• Start the engine and let it idle for a minute.
• With the clutch fully pressed, shift gently through all gears while parked.
• Take a short, easy test drive and confirm smooth shifting.
• Park on level ground and check underneath for leaks at the drain and fill plugs.
