🔧 Wrangler - Manual Transmission Fluid Change

This repair drains and refills the 6-speed manual transmission fluid on your Wrangler. Fresh transmission fluid helps protect the gears, bearings, and synchronizers so shifting stays smooth and the transmission lasts longer.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool transmission to avoid burns from hot fluid.
  • ⚠️ Park on level ground so the transmission fills to the correct level.
  • ⚠️ Always support your Wrangler with jack stands if you raise it. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Do not use automatic transmission fluid. Your Wrangler manual transmission requires the correct manual transmission fluid specification.
  • ⚠️ Remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug. This prevents draining the transmission and then discovering you cannot refill it.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 17mm hex bit socket
  • Torque wrench 10-80 ft-lbs
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • Drain pan 8-quart minimum
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack rated 3-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 3-ton minimum

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Manual transmission fluid meeting Chrysler MS-9224 specification - Qty: 2 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill plug sealing washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Wrangler on level ground and apply the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks in front of and behind the rear wheels.
  • 🚙 If extra clearance is needed, raise the front of your Wrangler with a floor jack and place it securely on jack stands. Keep the vehicle as level as possible.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and gloves before going underneath.
  • 💧 A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that lets you push new fluid upward into the transmission fill hole.
  • 🔩 A hex bit socket is a socket with an Allen-style tip used for internal hex plugs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Transmission Plugs

  • Use safety glasses and a flashlight if needed to look at the manual transmission case from underneath your Wrangler.
  • Find the fill plug on the side of the transmission case.
  • Find the drain plug at the lower area of the transmission case.
  • Wipe dirt away from both plugs using shop towels so debris does not fall inside.
  • Clean around plugs first.

Step 2: Remove the Fill Plug First

  • Place the drain pan under the transmission area.
  • Use the 17mm hex bit socket with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen and remove the fill plug.
  • If a small amount of fluid drips out, that is normal.
  • Set the fill plug aside on a clean shop towel.

Step 3: Drain the Old Transmission Fluid

  • Move the drain pan directly under the drain plug.
  • Use the 17mm hex bit socket with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain until it slows to occasional drips.
  • Inspect the old fluid. A little dark color is normal, but heavy metal flakes or chunks may point to internal wear.
  • Keep hands away from fluid stream.

Step 4: Clean and Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Use shop towels to clean the drain plug threads and plug tip.
  • Install a new drain plug sealing washer on the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug into the transmission by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 17mm hex bit socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Fill the Manual Transmission

  • Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the transmission fill opening.
  • Use the fluid transfer pump to add manual transmission fluid meeting Chrysler MS-9224 specification.
  • Fill slowly until fluid just begins to run back out of the fill hole.
  • The correct level is reached when fluid is even with the bottom edge of the fill opening while your Wrangler is level.
  • Expected fill amount is about 1.6 quarts, but always use the fill-hole level as the final check.

Step 6: Reinstall the Fill Plug

  • Install a new fill plug sealing washer on the fill plug.
  • Thread the fill plug in by hand first.
  • Use the 17mm hex bit socket and torque wrench to tighten the fill plug to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Use shop towels to wipe spilled fluid from the transmission case.

Step 7: Lower the Vehicle if Raised

  • Use the floor jack to lift your Wrangler slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands carefully.
  • Lower your Wrangler slowly with the floor jack.
  • Remove the wheel chocks after the vehicle is fully on the ground.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Wrangler and let it idle briefly.
  • ✅ With the clutch pressed, shift slowly through all gears while parked to feel for smooth engagement.
  • ✅ Take a short, gentle test drive and check that shifting feels normal.
  • ✅ Park on level ground and inspect the drain and fill plugs for leaks.
  • ✅ Dispose of used transmission fluid at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used oil. Do not pour it on the ground or into drains.
