How to Change Engine Oil & Replace the Oil Filter on a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools list, dexos1 5W-30 oil capacity, drain plug torque specs, and oil life reset for 2008
🔧 Malibu - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, and refill with the correct dexos-approved oil. This keeps turbo lubrication healthy, prevents sludge, and resets your oil life monitor so your Malibu tracks service correctly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the car with jack stands before going underneath.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be hot—let the engine cool 10-20 minutes to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep rags handy and wipe spills immediately to prevent slipping.
- ⚠️ Never get under the car supported only by a floor jack.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (SAE 5W-30 full synthetic, dexos1 approved) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug gasket (if equipped/separate) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. This helps the oil drain faster without being dangerously hot.
- Gather everything first—once the drain plug is out, you’ll want to move quickly and cleanly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and safely support the front of your Malibu
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper front lift point.
- Set the car down onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) and gently shake the car to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Access the oil drain plug and filter
- Slide the drain pan (at least 7-quart capacity) under the oil pan area.
- If your Malibu has a lower engine shield, remove the access panel/fasteners using a 7mm socket and/or 10mm socket, and a trim clip tool for any push-clips.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
- Finish removing the plug by hand (wear nitrile gloves) and let the oil drain into the pan.
- Tip: Push plug inward while unthreading.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Wipe the drain plug area clean using shop rags.
- If your drain plug uses a separate sealing washer, replace it with the new oil drain plug gasket.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten using a torque wrench (10-50 ft-lbs range): Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)
Step 5: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
- Use an oil filter wrench (adjustable band type) to break the filter loose, then spin it off by hand.
- Oil filter wrench = tool that grips the filter.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter (not stuck to the engine).
Step 6: Install the new oil filter
- Wipe the filter mounting surface with shop rags.
- Lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh oil (use a finger, with nitrile gloves).
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
- Tip: Hand-tight is correct—don’t over-tighten.
Step 7: Reinstall any covers and lower the car
- Reinstall the lower engine shield/access panel using the 7mm socket and/or 10mm socket.
- Raise slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, then lower the car fully.
Step 8: Refill with oil and verify the level
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
- Use a funnel and add SAE 5W-30 full synthetic, dexos1 approved (start with about 4.5 quarts).
- Reinstall the cap, start the engine for 30-45 seconds, then shut it off.
- Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed to reach the full mark (total is typically around 5 quarts with filter change).
- Check underneath for leaks using safety glasses and a light inspection.
Step 9: Reset the oil life monitor
- Turn ignition on (engine off).
- Use the steering wheel buttons to reach the Oil Life screen in the Driver Information Center.
- Press and hold SET/CLR until it prompts/reset completes (oil life returns to 100%).
✅ After Repair
- Recheck for leaks after your first short drive.
- Recheck the dipstick level the next morning (engine off, level ground) and top off if needed.
- Pour used oil into a sealed container and take it (and the old filter) to an oil recycling drop-off.
