🔧 QX80 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct full-synthetic oil. Fresh oil protects your engine from wear and helps it run cooler and cleaner.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
Assumption: Specs can vary by filter and production changes—verify final oil level on the dipstick after filling.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the truck on jack stands, never just a jack.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be hot—let it cool 15–30 minutes to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts, rubber hoses, and your driveway (use a drain pan).
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 7 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off so the oil drains faster but isn’t scorching hot.
- If you lift the front, raise it using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the front under-cover (if equipped)
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Position the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the engine area.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove under-cover bolts.
- Use a trim clip remover to pop out plastic clips (a trim clip remover is a forked tool that lifts clips without breaking them).
Step 2: Drain the old engine oil
- Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan.
- Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
- Finish unthreading by hand and quickly pull the plug away so oil flows into the drain pan (10-quart minimum).
- Let it drain until it slows to an occasional drip (typically 10–15 minutes).
Step 3: Replace the drain plug washer and reinstall the plug
- Remove the old washer from the drain plug and install the new drain plug crush washer.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench (10–80 ft-lb range) with a 14mm socket to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
- Tip: If it doesn’t thread easily, stop and realign.
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
- Use an oil filter wrench (cap or band style) to loosen the filter (an oil filter wrench grips the filter so you can turn it).
- Unscrew the filter by hand and keep it upright as you remove it.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface using shop towels.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic).
- Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the base.
- Tighten by hand an additional 2/3 turn, or use a torque wrench (10–80 ft-lb range) with the correct oil filter wrench (cap or band style): Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Tip: Hand-tight plus 2/3 turn is usually perfect.
Step 6: Reinstall the under-cover
- Reposition the under-cover.
- Install clips using the trim clip remover (press clips in straight).
- Tighten bolts using a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet.
Step 7: Refill with new engine oil
- Lower the truck off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
- Place a funnel in the fill hole.
- Pour in 6.5 quarts of engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) first.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and set the final oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back to the pan.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter using safety glasses.
- Check the dipstick level and add oil in small amounts (0.25 qt at a time) using the funnel until it reaches the full mark (most QX80 setups land around ~6.9 qt total with filter).
- Wipe spills using shop towels.
Step 9: Reset the oil/oil filter maintenance reminder
- Turn ignition ON (engine off).
- Using the steering wheel buttons, navigate the driver display menus: Settings > Maintenance > Oil and Filter > Reset.
- If your display wording differs, look for: Settings > Maintenance, then reset “Oil” and “Filter.”
✅ After Repair
- Recheck the dipstick one more time after a short 5–10 minute drive.
- Inspect for seepage around the oil filter and drain plug.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycler/parts store—do not dump it.
- Write down the mileage/date for your next service interval.
