🔧 Tucson - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with fresh oil to protect your engine from wear and sludge. Doing this on schedule is one of the best ways to keep your Tucson running smoothly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the SUV with jack stands (never the jack alone).
  • ⚠️ Hot oil can burn you—let the engine cool 15-30 minutes if it’s fully warmed up.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off the exhaust and belts to prevent smoke/odor and damage.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; used oil is a skin irritant.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)
  • Oil drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity)
  • Oil filter wrench (cap-style or band-style)
  • 10mm socket
  • Trim clip tool
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 5W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5.5 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer/gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • If you just drove, wait so the oil is warm (drains well) but not scorching hot.
  • Open the hood and loosen/remove the oil fill cap (this helps the oil drain faster).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the front of your Tucson

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper front jack point.
  • Set the vehicle down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and give the SUV a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the lower engine cover (if equipped)

  • Place the oil drain pan under the engine area.
  • Remove bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Remove plastic clips using a trim clip tool. Clip tool prevents breaking fasteners.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position the oil drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Loosen and remove the drain plug using a 17mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (typically 5-10 minutes).
  • Wipe the drain plug clean with shop rags.
  • Replace the drain plug crush washer/gasket (a crush washer is a soft ring that seals as it’s tightened).

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten using a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 Nm range).
  • Torque to 39-49 Nm (29-36 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the oil drain pan
  • Loosen the filter using an oil filter wrench (cap-style or band-style).
  • Spin it off the rest of the way by hand and let it drain into the pan.
  • Wipe the sealing surface clean with shop rags.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket is not stuck to the engine (double-gasket can cause a major leak).

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Apply a thin film of fresh oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
  • Install the filter by hand until the gasket contacts the base.
  • Tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn, or use a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 Nm range) with the proper adapter if you have it.
  • Torque to 11-15 Nm (8-11 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the lower engine cover

  • Reinstall clips by hand, then seat them fully using the trim clip tool.
  • Reinstall bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.

Step 8: Refill with fresh oil

  • Lower the Tucson off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole.
  • Add about 5.0 quarts first, then wait 1 minute.
  • Check the dipstick, then top off gradually until the level is near the “FULL” mark. Don’t overfill.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 9: Start, inspect for leaks, and recheck level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter using safety glasses.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Recheck the dipstick and adjust the oil level as needed using the funnel.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm there are no drips under the engine after a short 5-10 minute drive.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly (most parts stores accept used oil).
  • If your Tucson has a service interval reminder in the cluster, reset it using steering wheel buttons: Trip/Settings > Service Interval > Reset (wording can vary by cluster).
