🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Change
Your Camry uses a cartridge-style oil filter and the drain plug is on the oil pan. This service is straightforward, but clean sealing surfaces and the correct oil type matter for a leak-free result and proper engine protection.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool before draining oil. Hot oil can burn skin.
- Use jack stands if you raise the car. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Wear gloves and safety glasses. Used oil is messy and harmful to skin.
- Keep the car level when checking the final oil level.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

- Have the new oil and filter ready before opening the drain plug.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the car
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the car at the proper lift point.
- Support it with jack stands before going underneath.
- Never crawl under a car on a jack alone.
Step 2: Remove the drain plug and drain the oil
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely.
- Replace the oil drain plug gasket with a new one.
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand, then torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the oil filter housing
- Move the drain pan under the filter housing.
- Use a 64mm, 14-flute oil filter housing socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the cap.
- Remove the cap and old filter cartridge together.
- Expect a small spill when the housing opens.
Step 4: Replace the filter and seals
- Pull the old filter cartridge off the cap.
- Remove the old oil filter cap O-ring.
- Install the new O-ring in the same groove.
- Lightly coat the new O-ring with clean engine oil.
- Install the new filter cartridge onto the cap.
Step 5: Reinstall the oil filter housing
- Thread the cap in by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 64mm, 14-flute oil filter housing socket and torque wrench to tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Refill with fresh oil
- Lower the car to level ground.
- Remove the oil filler cap and insert a funnel.
- Add about 4.5 quarts first, then slowly top off.
- Total fill is about 4.8 quarts with filter change.
- Use 0W-16 synthetic oil. If not available, 0W-20 is the fallback only when necessary.
Step 7: Start, check, and finish
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Check for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
- Check the dipstick and top off as needed.
- Reinstall the oil cap securely.
✅ After Repair
- Verify the oil level is between the marks on the dipstick.
- Inspect underneath for drips after a short test drive.
- Reset the maintenance reminder in the gauge cluster if it is due.
