📋 Before You Begin

• ✅ Park your Corolla on level ground and set the parking brake.
• ✅ Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• ✅ Let the engine cool for at least 15-30 minutes if it was recently driven.
• ✅ A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to the correct tightness, helping prevent stripped threads or leaks.
• ✅ A crush washer is a soft sealing washer on the drain plug that should be replaced each oil change.
• ✅ Keep used oil off the ground. Put it in a sealed container and recycle it properly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

• Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point to lift the front of your Corolla.
• Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side pinch weld support points.
• Gently lower the car onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
• Give the car a light shake by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
• Never trust the jack alone.

Step 2: Position the Drain Pan

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Slide the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug.
• The drain plug is at the bottom of the oil pan, facing downward/rearward under the engine.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap

• Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap by hand.
• This lets air enter the engine while the old oil drains out.
• Use shop towels to wipe dirt away from the cap area before removing it.

Step 4: Drain the Old Engine Oil

• Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
• Finish removing the plug by hand while keeping pressure inward until the last thread releases.
• Let the oil drain into the drain pan until it slows to an occasional drip.
• Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug.
• Use shop towels to clean the drain plug and the oil pan sealing surface.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Install a new engine oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
• Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
• Hand-start every bolt first.

Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter

• Move the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
• Use the 64mm 14-flute oil filter wrench with the 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the spin-on oil filter.
• A spin-on filter is the metal can-style filter that unscrews as one complete piece.
• Once loose, remove the filter by hand.
• Keep the open end facing upward as much as possible to reduce spills.
• Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter.

Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter

• Use a clean finger with fresh 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil to lightly coat the rubber gasket on the new oil filter.
• Thread the new spin-on engine oil filter onto the engine by hand.
• Tighten the oil filter by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
• Then tighten it an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
• If using the 64mm 14-flute oil filter wrench, use it only lightly to finish the 3/4 turn.
• Do not overtighten the oil filter.

Step 8: Add New Engine Oil

• Place the funnel into the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
• Add about 4.0 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil first.
• Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
• Use shop towels to wipe any spilled oil from the engine cover or valve cover area.

Step 9: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

• Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
• Turn the engine off.
• Use safety glasses and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
• If you see a leak, shut the engine off and correct it before driving.

Step 10: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
• Lower your Corolla slowly back onto level ground with the floor jack.

Step 11: Set the Final Oil Level

• Wait 5 minutes so the oil can drain back into the oil pan.
• Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with shop towels, reinstall it fully, then pull it out again.
• Add oil through the funnel in small amounts until the level is near the full mark.
• Total oil capacity with filter is approximately 4.4 quarts.
• Do not overfill. Too much oil can cause engine damage.

Step 12: Reset the Maintenance Reminder

• Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
• Use the steering wheel controls to select the odometer/trip display.
• Set the display to Trip A.
• Turn the ignition OFF.
• Press and hold the trip reset button.
• While holding the button, turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
• Keep holding until the maintenance reset progress completes and the reminder clears.
• If your Corolla shows settings through the instrument display, use Settings > Vehicle Settings > Scheduled Maintenance > Reset.

• ✅ Start the engine again and confirm the oil pressure warning light turns off within a few seconds.
• ✅ Recheck for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter.
