🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change

On your Tacoma, the engine oil and filter service is straightforward, but the filter is a cartridge-style element, not a spin-on can. You’ll drain the oil, replace the filter element and O-ring, then refill with the correct amount of oil and verify the level.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and let the engine cool enough to avoid burns.
  • The engine oil and filter housing can be hot after driving.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the truck. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Keep the drain pan centered under the oil pan to avoid spills.
  • Do not overtighten the drain plug or filter cap. Aluminum parts can strip.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • Oil filter cap wrench 64mm 14-flute
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 5W-30 full synthetic) - Qty: 5.5 quarts
  • Oil filter element kit - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool for 15-30 minutes if it was recently running.
  • If you raise the front of the truck, chock the rear wheels first.
  • Have the new filter element and crush washer ready before draining the oil.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the truck

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the truck if needed.
  • Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
  • Make sure the truck is stable before getting underneath it.

Step 2: Remove the drain plug and drain the oil

  • Put the drain pan under the oil pan.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely.
  • Replace the crush washer on the drain plug.
  • Install the drain plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the oil filter housing

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter housing.
  • Use the Oil filter cap wrench 64mm 14-flute to loosen and remove the filter cap.
  • Pull the filter element out of the housing.
  • Let the remaining oil drip into the pan.
  • Keep the old filter upright to reduce mess.

Step 4: Replace the filter element and seals

  • Remove the old O-ring from the filter cap.
  • Install the new O-ring from the filter kit.
  • Lightly coat the new O-ring with fresh engine oil.
  • Install the new filter element into the housing.
  • Reinstall the filter cap and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Refill with engine oil

  • Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
  • Use a funnel to add 5.5 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic.
  • Install the oil fill cap.

Step 6: Start and check for leaks

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Check the drain plug and filter housing for leaks.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.

Step 7: Verify the oil level

  • Use the dipstick to check the oil level.
  • Add oil in small amounts if needed until the level is at the full mark.
  • Do not overfill.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm there are no oil leaks after a short test drive.
  • Recheck the oil level after the engine sits for a few minutes.
  • Reset your maintenance reminder if your Tacoma has one set manually.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter at a recycling center or auto parts store.
