📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Odyssey on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Wheel chocks are wedges that help stop the vehicle from rolling.
• Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
• Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
• If extra clearance is needed, lift the front with a floor jack, rated 3-ton minimum and support it with jack stands, rated 3-ton minimum.
• Have your new oil, filter, and drain plug washer ready before draining the old oil.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Set Up Under the Vehicle

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Use the drain pan, 8-quart minimum and place it under the engine oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan.
• If the lower splash shield blocks access, use a trim clip removal tool to remove the clips carefully.
• Keep clips organized for reassembly.

Step 2: Drain the Old Engine Oil

• Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
• Remove the drain plug by hand once loose, while keeping your hand out of the oil stream.
• Let the oil drain until it slows to occasional drips.
• Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug by hand.
• Wipe the drain plug with shop towels.

Step 3: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Install the new oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
• Thread the drain plug into the oil pan by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the plug crooked.
• Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
• Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 4: Remove the Old Oil Filter

• Move the drain pan, 8-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
• Use the oil filter wrench, 65mm 14-flute with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter.
• Spin the filter off by hand once loose.
• Keep the open end of the filter facing up as you remove it to reduce spills.
• Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter. The gasket is the rubber sealing ring on the filter.
• Never double-gasket an oil filter.

Step 5: Install the New Oil Filter

• Use a clean finger in your nitrile gloves to apply a light coat of fresh SAE 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil to the new filter gasket.
• Thread the new engine oil filter onto the engine by hand.
• Tighten the filter by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
• Then tighten it an additional 3/4 turn by hand, or use the oil filter wrench, 65mm 14-flute only if needed for access.
• Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs) if using a torque wrench-compatible filter cup.
• Hand-tight is usually enough.

Step 6: Refill the Engine Oil

• Place the funnel into the engine oil fill opening on top of the engine.
• Pour in about 5.3 quarts of SAE 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil first.
• Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
• Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
• Shut the engine off and wait 3 minutes so the oil can drain back into the oil pan.

Step 7: Check the Oil Level

• Pull the dipstick out by hand and wipe it clean with shop towels.
• Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again.
• Check that the oil level is between the lower and upper marks.
• Add oil slowly with the funnel until the level reaches near the upper mark.
• Total refill with filter replacement is approximately 5.7 quarts.
• Do not overfill the engine.

Step 8: Inspect for Leaks and Reinstall Shields

• Use safety glasses and look under your Odyssey for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
• Use shop towels to wipe any spilled oil from the oil pan, filter area, and splash shield.
• If removed, reinstall the splash shield clips by hand and seat them with the trim clip removal tool.
• If lifted, use the floor jack, rated 3-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stands, rated 3-ton minimum, and lower it slowly.

Step 9: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

• Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine, or press the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal.
• Use the steering wheel controls to go to Home > Maintenance > Oil Life on the driver information display.
• Press and hold the Enter button until the reset mode appears.
• Select All Due Items or Oil Life, then press Enter to confirm.
• Verify the oil life shows 100%.

✅ After Repair

• Start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute while watching for the oil pressure warning light to turn off.
• Check under your Odyssey again for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
• After a short drive, park on level ground, wait 3 minutes, and recheck the dipstick level.
• Recycle the used oil and old filter properly.
• Write down the mileage and date of the oil change.
