🔧 Focus - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

This repair drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Focus with fresh oil. Clean oil protects the turbocharged 1.0L engine from wear and helps prevent sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool until it is warm, not hot. Hot oil can burn skin.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands before going underneath. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves. Used oil can irritate skin and eyes.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off the accessory belt, exhaust, and electrical connectors.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive torque wrench
  • Oil filter cap socket, 74mm 14-flute
  • Drain pan, 8-quart minimum
  • Oil funnel
  • Floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum
  • Jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Trim clip remover
  • Clean shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil, 5W-20 full synthetic meeting Ford WSS-M2C948-B - Qty: 4.3 quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Focus on level ground, shift into neutral, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so the car cannot roll.
  • 🌡️ Run the engine for 2-3 minutes if cold, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • 🔑 Keep the key out of the ignition while working under the vehicle.
  • 📘 A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.
  • 📘 An oil filter cap socket is a cup-shaped socket that fits the plastic oil filter housing cap without damaging it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front of the Car

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use the floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum at the front jacking point to lift the front of your Focus.
  • Place jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
  • Gently lower the car onto the jack stands with the floor jack.
  • Shake lightly to confirm stability.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Shield if Equipped

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a trim clip remover to remove any plastic push clips holding the lower shield.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet if bolts are fitted.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in the order removed.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap

  • Open the hood.
  • Use your hand to remove the engine oil fill cap on top of the engine.
  • Pull the dipstick up slightly by hand. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
  • Do not let dirt enter the engine.

Step 4: Drain the Old Engine Oil

  • Place the drain pan, 8-quart minimum under the oil drain plug.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
  • Remove the drain plug by hand once loose and let the oil drain fully.
  • Wait until the oil changes from a stream to slow drips.
  • Use clean shop towels to wipe the drain plug area.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Install a new engine oil drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start bolts before tightening.

Step 6: Remove the Oil Filter

  • Move the drain pan, 8-quart minimum under the oil filter housing area.
  • Use the oil filter cap socket, 74mm 14-flute with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter housing cap.
  • Remove the cap slowly so trapped oil can drain into the pan.
  • Pull the old filter element out of the cap by hand.
  • Remove the old O-ring from the cap by hand or carefully with a trim clip remover.
  • Do not scratch the plastic cap.

Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Use a little fresh 5W-20 full synthetic engine oil on your finger to lightly coat the new O-ring.
  • Install the new oil filter O-ring into the correct groove on the filter cap.
  • Push the new engine oil filter into the cap until it seats fully.
  • Thread the filter cap into the housing by hand first.
  • Use the oil filter cap socket, 74mm 14-flute and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the cap.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Refill the Engine Oil

  • Place the oil funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in about 4.0 quarts of 5W-20 full synthetic engine oil meeting Ford WSS-M2C948-B.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
  • Push the dipstick fully back in by hand.

Step 9: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

  • Make sure tools are clear of the engine bay.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off.
  • Use safety glasses and look under the car for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter cap.
  • Use clean shop towels to wipe any spilled oil.

Step 10: Check and Top Off Oil Level

  • Wait 5 minutes so the oil drains back into the oil pan.
  • Pull the dipstick out by hand and wipe it clean with clean shop towels.
  • Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again.
  • Add oil through the oil funnel in small amounts until the level reaches the full mark.
  • Total fill is approximately 4.3 quarts, but always finish by dipstick level.
  • Do not overfill the engine.

Step 11: Reinstall the Lower Engine Shield

  • Raise the shield into position by hand.
  • Use the trim clip remover to help align plastic clips if needed.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall any bolts.
  • Snug shield bolts by hand pressure only; do not overtighten plastic or light-duty fasteners.

Step 12: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Focus slowly to the ground using the floor jack.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 13: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the steering wheel buttons to open Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset if shown on your cluster.
  • Select and hold OK until the oil life resets to 100%.
  • If the menu is not shown, turn ignition on and press the accelerator pedal and brake pedal fully at the same time for about 20 seconds until the oil reset message appears.
  • Turn the ignition off.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Drive your Focus for 5-10 minutes, then park on level ground and recheck the oil level.
  • ✅ Look under the car again for any oil dripping from the drain plug or filter housing.
  • ✅ Confirm the oil life monitor shows 100%.
  • ✅ Recycle used oil and the old oil filter at an approved recycling center or auto parts store.
  • ✅ Write down the mileage and date of the oil change.
