📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Canyon on level ground.
• Shift to Park if automatic, or 1st gear if manual.
• Set the parking brake firmly.
• Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
• Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
• Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap. This helps oil drain smoothly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and Support the Front

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Canyon at the front frame crossmember.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame rails.
• Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
• Give the truck a light push to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
• Never work under a jack alone.

Step 2: Position the Drain Pan

• Slide the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil pan.
• The oil pan is the metal pan at the bottom of the engine.
• Position the pan slightly behind the drain plug because oil may shoot outward at first.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Drain Plug

• Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
• Finish removing the plug by hand while keeping inward pressure on it.
• Pull the plug away quickly and let the oil drain into the pan.
• Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
• Keep your hand out of the oil stream.

Step 4: Inspect and Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Use shop towels to wipe the drain plug clean.
• Remove the old oil drain plug sealing washer and install the new one.
• Thread the drain plug in by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the bolt crooked.
• Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter

• Move the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
• Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter.
• An oil filter wrench grips the round filter so you can turn it when it is too tight by hand.
• Unscrew the filter by hand once it is loose.
• Keep the open end upward as you remove it to reduce spills.
• Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.
• A stuck gasket can cause major leaks.

Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter

• Use a clean gloved finger to spread a thin coat of fresh 5W-30 engine oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket.
• Thread the new engine oil filter onto the filter mount by hand.
• Tighten it until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
• Then tighten by hand another 3/4 turn.
• Do not use the oil filter wrench to over-tighten the new filter.

Step 7: Refill the Engine Oil

• Lower your Canyon back to level ground using the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
• Remove the jack stands before fully lowering.
• Place the funnel into the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
• Pour in 4.5 quarts of 5W-30 Dexos1 Gen 2 or newer full synthetic engine oil.
• Install the oil fill cap.
• Wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick with a shop towel.
• Add oil in small amounts until the level reaches the full mark.
• Do not overfill. Too much oil can damage the engine.

Step 8: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

• Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
• Watch the oil pressure warning light. It should turn off within a few seconds.
• Shut the engine off.
• Use safety glasses and inspect underneath with a shop towel.
• Check around the drain plug and oil filter for leaks.

Step 9: Final Oil Level Check

• Wait 5 minutes so oil can drain back into the oil pan.
• Pull the dipstick, wipe it with a shop towel, reinstall it fully, then pull it again.
• The oil level should be at or just below the full mark.
• Add a small amount using the funnel if needed.
• Reinstall the dipstick and oil fill cap securely.

Step 10: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

• Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
• Use the steering wheel controls to open the Driver Information Center.
• Select Info > Oil Life.
• Press and hold the checkmark button until the oil life resets to 100%.
• If equipped with a basic cluster, use the trip stem to display oil life, then hold the stem until it resets.

• ✅ Recheck the dipstick after the engine sits for 5 minutes.
• ✅ Properly recycle the used oil and oil filter at an auto parts store or recycling center.
