🔧 Escape - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Escape with fresh oil. Fresh oil protects the turbocharged 1.5L engine from wear, heat, and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface so the oil drains correctly and the vehicle stays stable.
- ⚠️ Never work under your Escape supported only by a jack; use jack stands.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be hot. Let the engine cool until it is warm, not burning hot.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves to protect your eyes and skin.
- ⚠️ Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an approved recycling location.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (5W-20 synthetic blend or full synthetic) - Qty: 4.3 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug gasket/seal - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine run for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires before lifting the front.
- A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.
- The oil filter cap wrench fits over the oil filter housing so you can loosen it without crushing it.
- Approximate refill amount is 4.3 quarts, but always use the dipstick to set the final level.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use the floor jack at the front jacking point to raise the front of your Escape.
- Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Give the vehicle a light push to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
- Never trust the jack alone.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 7mm socket, 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
- Keep the fasteners grouped together so they go back in the same locations.
Step 3: Remove the Oil Fill Cap
- Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap by hand.
- Pull the dipstick up slightly by hand.
- This helps air enter the engine so the old oil drains smoothly.
Step 4: Drain the Old Engine Oil
- Place the 10-quart oil drain pan under the oil drain plug.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
- Remove the plug by hand once it is loose, keeping pressure inward until the last thread.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
- Inspect the drain plug and replace the oil drain plug gasket/seal.
- Clean the drain plug with shop towels.
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench and 15mm socket to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
- Hand-start bolts to avoid damage.
Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter
- Move the oil drain pan under the oil filter area.
- Use the 74mm, 14-flute oil filter cap wrench, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to loosen the oil filter.
- Spin the oil filter off by hand once it is loose.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface with shop towels.
- Old gasket left behind causes leaks.
Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter
- Apply a thin film of fresh 5W-20 engine oil to the new oil filter gasket using a gloved finger.
- Thread the new engine oil filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
- Tighten the filter by hand an additional 3/4 turn, unless the filter label states a different amount.
- If using a cartridge-style cap on your filter setup, use the torque wrench and 74mm, 14-flute oil filter cap wrench to tighten the cap to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Do not over-tighten the filter.
Step 7: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Position the lower splash shield back under your Escape.
- Use the 7mm socket, 8mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to reinstall the fasteners.
- Tighten the small splash shield fasteners snugly by hand tool only.
- Do not over-tighten plastic or small underbody fasteners.
Step 8: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Escape slowly to the ground using the floor jack.
Step 9: Add Fresh Engine Oil
- Place the funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Pour in about 4.0 quarts of 5W-20 engine oil.
- Wait 1 minute, then check the dipstick by wiping it with shop towels, reinstalling it fully, and pulling it out again.
- Add oil slowly until the level is near the full mark.
- Install the oil fill cap by hand.
- Add slowly near the full mark.
Step 10: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Use safety glasses and look under the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
- Use shop towels to wipe the dipstick, then check the oil level again.
- Add oil with the funnel as needed until the level is correct.
Step 11: Reset the Oil Life Monitor
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the steering wheel controls to open Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.
- Press and hold OK until the display confirms the oil life reset.
- If your display layout is different, use Settings > Vehicle Settings > Oil Life > Hold OK to Reset.
- Turn the ignition off.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm the dipstick oil level is between the low and full marks after the engine has been off for 5 minutes.
- ✅ Check under your Escape again after the first short drive for any oil drips.
- ✅ Recheck the oil level the next day on level ground.
- ✅ Recycle the used oil and old filter at an approved oil collection center.
- ✅ In Panipat, use a licensed automotive workshop or oil recycler that accepts used engine oil; do not pour oil into drains or soil.
