📋 Before You Begin

• Park your RAV4 on level ground.
• Set the parking brake and place the transmission in Park.
• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• If lifting the front, use a floor jack and support the RAV4 securely with jack stands.
• Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
• Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. This helps the oil drain smoothly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the Lower Engine Area

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• If more room is needed, lift the front of the RAV4 with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
• Gently lower the RAV4 onto the jack stands before going underneath.
• Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove any small plastic under-cover retainers needed to access the drain plug and oil filter housing.
• Take a photo before removing clips.

Step 2: Position the Drain Pan

• Place the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug.
• The drain plug is on the bottom of the engine oil pan.
• Slide the pan slightly toward the rear, because oil may shoot outward at first.

Step 3: Drain the Engine Oil

• Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the engine oil drain plug.
• Remove the drain plug by hand once loose.
• Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
• Remove the old drain plug gasket from the drain plug.
• Wipe the drain plug clean with shop towels.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Install the new engine oil drain plug gasket onto the drain plug.
• Thread the drain plug in by hand first. This helps prevent cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the bolt crooked.
• Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
• Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 5: Remove the Oil Filter Housing

• Move the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter housing.
• The RAV4 uses a cartridge-style oil filter. The paper filter sits inside a reusable filter housing instead of being a metal spin-on can.
• Attach the 64mm 14-flute oil filter wrench (specialty) to the filter housing.
• Use the 3/8-inch ratchet and 3/8-inch extension to turn the housing counterclockwise.
• Unscrew the housing slowly and let oil drain into the pan.
• Remove the housing and old filter cartridge.

Step 6: Replace the Filter Cartridge and O-Ring

• Pull the old paper filter cartridge out of the housing by hand.
• Remove the old O-ring from the filter housing. An O-ring is a round rubber seal that prevents leaks.
• Wipe the housing clean with shop towels.
• Lightly coat the new O-ring with fresh engine oil 0W-16 full synthetic.
• Install the new O-ring into the correct groove on the housing.
• Push the new engine oil filter cartridge kit with O-ring into the housing.
• Do not twist the O-ring.

Step 7: Reinstall the Oil Filter Housing

• Thread the filter housing into the engine by hand first.
• Use the 64mm 14-flute oil filter wrench (specialty), 3/8-inch extension, and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten it.
• Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
• Wipe the filter area clean with shop towels.

Step 8: Refill the Engine Oil

• Lower the RAV4 to level ground if it was lifted.
• Place the funnel into the engine oil filler opening.
• Pour in about 4.5 quarts of engine oil 0W-16 full synthetic.
• Reinstall the oil filler cap by hand.
• Wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick level.
• Add oil slowly until the level is near the full mark.
• Total refill with filter is approximately 4.8 quarts.

Step 9: Start and Leak Check

• Start the RAV4 and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
• Use safety glasses and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter housing.
• Shut the engine off.
• Wait 5 minutes so the oil can drain back into the oil pan.
• Check the dipstick again and top off with the funnel if needed.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Cover

• Use the flat-blade screwdriver to reinstall any plastic retainers or access panels removed earlier.
• Make sure the cover sits flat and does not hang loose.
• Wipe any spilled oil with shop towels.

Step 11: Reset the Maintenance Reminder

• Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
• Use the steering wheel controls to select Settings > Vehicle Settings > Scheduled Maintenance > Reset.
• Confirm the reset when prompted.
• If your display shows an oil maintenance item separately, also select Settings > Vehicle Settings > Oil Maintenance > Reset.

• Drive your RAV4 for 5-10 minutes, then park on level ground.
• Wait 5 minutes and recheck the dipstick level.
• Look under the engine again for oil drips.
• Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an approved recycling center or auto parts store.
• Do not overfill. Too much oil can cause engine damage.
