• 📋 Run the engine for 2-3 minutes if it is cold, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
• 📋 Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap before draining. This helps oil flow out smoothly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

• Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front frame/crossmember lift point to raise the front of your Colorado enough to work underneath.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
• Gently lower the truck onto the jack stands and give it a light shake to confirm it is stable.
• Never crawl under a jack-only vehicle.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Access Panel if Equipped

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• If your Colorado has a lower splash shield or access panel, use a plastic trim tool to release any push clips.
• Use the correct socket from your tool set if bolts are fitted, then set the panel and fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Position the Drain Pan

• Slide the oil drain pan 10-quart capacity under the engine oil drain plug.
• Position the pan slightly behind the plug because the oil may shoot outward at first.
• Use shop towels nearby for spills.

Step 4: Drain the Engine Oil

• Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug counterclockwise.
• Carefully remove the plug by hand and let the oil drain fully into the pan.
• Wait until the oil slows to an occasional drip.
• Inspect the drain plug threads. Replace the engine oil drain plug seal.
• Keep fingers clear of hot oil.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Wipe the drain plug area clean with shop towels.
• Thread the drain plug in by hand first. This helps prevent cross-threading, which means the threads start crooked and can damage the oil pan.
• Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the Oil Filter Cap

• From the top of the engine bay, locate the oil filter housing cap on the engine.
• Use a 24mm socket, oil filter cap wrench 24mm socket-compatible, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter cap counterclockwise.
• Lift the cap and old cartridge filter out slowly so oil can drip back into the housing.
• Use shop towels to catch drips.

Step 7: Replace the Cartridge Filter and O-Ring

• Pull the old filter element straight off the cap by hand.
• Remove the old cap O-ring by hand or with a plastic trim tool. Do not scratch the plastic cap.
• Lightly coat the new O-ring with fresh 5W-30 full synthetic dexos1 approved engine oil.
• Install the new O-ring into the same groove where the old one sat.
• Push the new cartridge-style engine oil filter onto the cap until it seats fully.
• Match the old filter orientation.

Step 8: Reinstall the Oil Filter Cap

• Lower the filter and cap assembly into the housing by hand.
• Start the cap threads by hand to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 24mm socket, oil filter cap wrench 24mm socket-compatible, and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the cap.
• Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Add Fresh Engine Oil

• Place a funnel into the engine oil fill opening.
• Add 5.5 quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic dexos1 approved engine oil first.
• Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
• Do not add all 6 quarts immediately. Final level is checked after the engine runs.

Step 10: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

• Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
• Turn the engine off.
• Use safety glasses and look under your Colorado for leaks at the drain plug and around the oil filter cap.
• If a leak is present, shut the engine off and correct it before continuing.

Step 11: Check and Set the Oil Level

• Wait 5 minutes after shutting the engine off so oil can drain back into the oil pan.
• Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with shop towels, reinstall it fully, then pull it again.
• Add oil through the funnel in small amounts until the level is at the full mark.
• Your Colorado typically takes about 6 quarts with filter, but the dipstick is the final check.
• Reinstall the oil fill cap and dipstick securely.

Step 12: Reinstall the Access Panel and Lower the Truck

• If removed, reinstall the lower splash shield or access panel using the plastic trim tool for push clips.
• Use the appropriate socket if bolts were removed. Tighten small splash shield bolts snug only.
• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower your Colorado slowly to the ground.

Step 13: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

• Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine, or start the engine if needed for the display.
• Use the steering wheel controls to open the Driver Information Center.
• Select Info > Oil Life.
• Press and hold the checkmark/select button until the oil life resets to 100%.
• If prompted, select Yes to confirm.
