📋 Before You Begin

• Park your HR-V on level ground.
• Set the parking brake.
• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• Run the engine for 2-3 minutes if it is cold, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
• Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
• The oil filter is a small metal canister that screws onto the engine and traps dirt from the oil.
• A crush washer is a soft sealing washer on the drain plug. Replace it every oil change to prevent leaks.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and Secure the Front

• Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your HR-V at the front center jacking point.
• Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
• Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
• Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
• Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
• Never trust the jack alone.

Step 2: Position the Drain Pan

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Slide the drain pan 6-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug.
• The drain plug is at the bottom of the oil pan, facing downward/rearward.
• Use shop towels nearby for spills.

Step 3: Remove the Engine Oil Drain Plug

• Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
• Finish removing the plug by hand while pushing inward slightly, then pull it away quickly.
• Let the oil drain fully into the drain pan 6-quart minimum.
• This may take 5-10 minutes.
• Keep your hand away from the oil stream.

Step 4: Replace the Drain Plug Washer

• Use shop towels to wipe the drain plug clean.
• Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug by hand.
• Install the new engine oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
• Wipe the sealing surface on the oil pan with shop towels.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Thread the drain plug in by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the bolt crooked.
• Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
• Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter

• Move the drain pan 6-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
• Use the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute (specialty) with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter counterclockwise.
• A specialty oil filter wrench grips the filter so you can loosen it without crushing it.
• Spin the filter off by hand once loose.
• Keep the open end facing up to reduce spills.
• Use shop towels to wipe the oil filter mounting surface clean.
• Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter.
• Two gaskets will cause a major leak.

Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter

• Dip a gloved finger into fresh 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil.
• Lightly coat the rubber gasket on the new engine oil filter.
• Thread the new filter onto the engine by hand.
• Tighten it by hand until the gasket contacts the engine, then tighten about 3/4 turn more.
• If using the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute (specialty) and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench, Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
• Do not overtighten the oil filter.

Step 8: Add New Engine Oil

• Remove the engine oil fill cap if it is not already removed.
• Place a funnel into the oil fill opening.
• Pour in about 3.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil first.
• Wait one minute, then check the dipstick.
• Add oil slowly until the level reaches near the upper mark on the dipstick.
• The typical refill amount with filter replacement is about 3.9 quarts.
• Install the oil fill cap by hand.
• Add slowly. Overfilling is not good.

Step 9: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

• Use shop towels to wipe the drain plug and oil filter areas clean.
• Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
• Shut the engine off.
• Look underneath with safety glasses on and check the drain plug and oil filter for leaks.
• If you see oil dripping, shut everything down and recheck the drain plug and filter tightness.

Step 10: Lower the Vehicle and Final Level Check

• Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
• Lower your HR-V onto level ground.
• Wait 2-3 minutes so oil can drain back into the oil pan.
• Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop towels, reinstall it fully, then pull it again.
• Add 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil if needed until the level is between the lower and upper marks, ideally close to the upper mark.

Step 11: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

• Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
• Use the steering wheel controls to go to Vehicle Information or the maintenance/oil life display.
• Select the engine oil life screen.
• Press and hold the select/reset control until the reset mode appears.
• Select Reset or All Due Items if shown.
• Confirm the oil life resets to 100%.
• If your HR-V shows the reset through the audio display, use Home > Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance Info > Reset Items > Engine Oil Life.
