🔧 Mustang - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

This job drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Mustang with fresh oil. Clean oil protects the 5.0L V8 from wear, heat, and sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool-to-warm engine, not a hot one. Hot oil can burn skin.
  • ⚠️ Support your Mustang with jack stands before going underneath. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off the exhaust and belts. Wipe spills before starting the engine.
  • ⚠️ Used engine oil is hazardous waste. Store it in a sealed container and recycle it properly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Oil drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench (cap or strap style)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (5W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 10 quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Mustang on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels to stop the car from rolling.
  • 🌡️ Run the engine for 2-3 minutes if it is cold, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • 🧰 A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.
  • 🛢️ An oil filter wrench grips the round oil filter so you can loosen it if it is too tight by hand.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and Secure the Front of the Car

  • Use the floor jack at the front center jacking point or approved front lift point to raise your Mustang.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
  • Lower the car gently onto the jack stands.
  • Give the car a light push to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
  • Never crawl under a jack-only car.

Step 2: Remove the Oil Fill Cap

  • Open the hood.
  • Use your hand to remove the engine oil fill cap on top of the engine.
  • Set the cap somewhere clean. This helps the oil drain smoothly.

Step 3: Position the Drain Pan

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Slide the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan.
  • Make sure the pan is slightly forward of the plug because oil may shoot outward at first.

Step 4: Drain the Old Engine Oil

  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
  • Finish removing the plug by hand while pressing inward slightly, then pull it away quickly.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
  • Use shop towels to clean oil from the drain plug area.
  • Keep your hand above the oil stream.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Install a new drain plug sealing washer on the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Move the oil drain pan under the oil filter area.
  • Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the old oil filter if it is too tight by hand.
  • Spin the filter off by hand slowly. Oil will spill from the filter.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter.
  • Use shop towels to wipe the filter mounting surface clean.
  • A stuck old gasket causes leaks.

Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter

  • Dip a clean gloved finger into fresh 5W-20 full synthetic engine oil.
  • Lightly coat the rubber gasket on the new engine oil filter.
  • Thread the new oil filter on by hand until the gasket touches the engine.
  • Tighten it by hand another 3/4 turn after gasket contact.
  • Do not use the oil filter wrench to tighten the new filter unless the filter instructions specifically require it.

Step 8: Refill with Fresh Oil

  • Place a funnel in the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in about 9 quarts of 5W-20 full synthetic engine oil first.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
  • Use shop towels to wipe any spilled oil.

Step 9: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Do not rev the engine.
  • Look underneath with a flashlight and check the drain plug and oil filter for leaks.
  • Shut the engine off.

Step 10: Check and Top Off the Oil Level

  • Wait 5 minutes so the oil can drain back into the oil pan.
  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with shop towels, reinstall it fully, then pull it again.
  • Add oil through the funnel in small amounts until the dipstick reads full.
  • Your Mustang typically takes about 10 quarts with filter, but always final-check by dipstick.

Step 11: Lower the Car

  • Use the floor jack to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Mustang slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 12: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the steering wheel controls to open Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.
  • Press and hold OK until the display confirms the oil life has reset to 100%.
  • If your screen layout differs, use Settings > Advanced Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Recheck the oil level after your first short drive and top off if needed.
  • ✅ Check under the car again for any oil drips.
  • ✅ Confirm the oil life monitor shows 100%.
  • ✅ Pour used oil into a sealed container and recycle it with the old filter at an approved oil recycling location.
