🔧 Tucson - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Tucson with fresh oil. Clean oil protects the 2.0L engine from wear, heat, and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface only, and support your Tucson with jack stands if you raise it.
- ⚠️ Never rely on a floor jack alone. A floor jack lifts the vehicle; jack stands hold it safely.
- ⚠️ Hot oil can burn skin. Let the engine cool for 10-20 minutes if it was fully hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect against hot oil and splashes.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this oil change.

- Oil drain pan 8-quart minimum
- Funnel

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil 5W-20 synthetic or synthetic blend - Qty: 5 quarts
- Spin-on engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Engine oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Tucson on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll.
- 🌡️ Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster, but it should not be painfully hot.
- 📏 Oil capacity is about 4.2 quarts with filter. Add slowly and verify with the dipstick.
- ♻️ Keep the old oil and filter sealed for recycling. Do not pour oil on the ground or into a drain.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum at the front center lifting point or a front side pinch-weld lift point.
- Place the jack stands 2-ton minimum under the front side pinch-weld support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Never crawl under a jack-only vehicle.
Step 2: Open the Hood and Remove the Oil Fill Cap
- Use your hand to remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
- Pull the dipstick up slightly with your hand. This helps oil drain more smoothly.
- A dipstick is the small handle used to check engine oil level.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Slide the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan.
- The oil pan is the metal pan at the bottom of the engine that stores engine oil.
Step 4: Drain the Old Engine Oil
- Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
- Finish removing the drain plug by hand while keeping pressure inward, then pull it away quickly so oil flows into the pan.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to a drip. This usually takes 5-10 minutes.
- Use shop towels to wipe the drain plug area clean.
Step 5: Replace the Drain Plug Washer and Reinstall the Plug
- Use your hand to remove the old crush washer from the drain plug.
- Install the new engine oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
- A crush washer is a soft sealing washer that compresses to prevent oil leaks.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
- Hand-start bolts before using tools.
Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter
- Move the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
- Use the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute with the 3/8-inch ratchet to turn the oil filter counterclockwise.
- Once loose, spin the filter off by hand. Keep it upright as much as possible because it contains oil.
- Use shop towels to wipe the oil filter mounting surface clean.
- Make sure the old rubber filter gasket did not stick to the engine. A gasket is the rubber sealing ring on the oil filter.
Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter
- Use your gloved finger to apply a light coat of fresh 5W-20 engine oil to the new oil filter gasket.
- Thread the new spin-on engine oil filter onto the engine by hand.
- Tighten it by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten another 3/4 turn by hand.
- If using the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute, tighten gently only. Do not crush the filter.
- Oil filter tightening spec is typically Torque to 12-16 Nm (9-12 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the oil filter.
Step 8: Add Fresh Engine Oil
- Place the funnel into the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
- Pour in about 4.0 quarts of 5W-20 engine oil.
- Remove the funnel, reinstall the oil fill cap by hand, and push the dipstick fully back in.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds while watching underneath for leaks.
- Shut the engine off and wait 3-5 minutes for oil to drain back into the oil pan.
Step 9: Check and Correct the Oil Level
- Use a shop towel to wipe the dipstick clean.
- Insert the dipstick fully, pull it out again, and read the oil level.
- Add oil with the funnel in small amounts until the level reaches the full mark.
- Total fill is about 4.2 quarts with filter, but always trust the dipstick final reading.
- Add slowly. Overfilling can damage the engine.
Step 10: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands 2-ton minimum from both sides.
- Lower your Tucson slowly to the ground with the floor jack 2-ton minimum.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 11: Reset the Service Reminder
- Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Use the steering wheel buttons to access User Settings > Service Interval if equipped.
- Select Reset or set the next service interval, then confirm.
- If your cluster does not show a service interval menu, no manual reset may be required.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and verify the oil pressure warning light turns off within a few seconds.
- ✅ Check under the engine for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- ✅ Take a short 5-minute drive, then park on level ground and recheck the dipstick after 3-5 minutes.
- ✅ Recheck for drips the next day, especially around the drain plug and filter.
- ♻️ Recycle the used oil and oil filter at an auto parts store, service shop, or local recycling center.
