🔧 Escape - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
This service replaces the used engine oil and oil filter on your Escape. Fresh oil protects the 2.5L engine from wear, heat, and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface so the oil drains correctly and the vehicle stays stable.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool for 15-30 minutes if it was just driven; hot oil can burn skin.
- ⚠️ Never work under your Escape supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off the serpentine belt, exhaust, and electrical connectors.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Engine oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🛞 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
- 🌡️ Warm oil drains better. Run the engine for 2-3 minutes if it is completely cold, then shut it off.
- 🔧 A torque wrench is a tool that tightens a bolt to an exact tightness so it is not too loose or too tight.
- 🔧 An oil filter wrench is a cup-style tool that grips the oil filter so you can remove it without crushing it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Escape at the front subframe jacking area.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front pinch weld or approved support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Never trust the jack alone.
Step 2: Remove the Oil Fill Cap
- Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap by hand.
- Pull the dipstick up slightly by hand to help the oil drain smoothly.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe around the oil fill area if it is dusty.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
- Slide the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan.
- Position the pan slightly behind the plug because oil may shoot outward at first.
Step 4: Drain the Old Engine Oil
- Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
- Finish removing the plug by hand while pressing inward slightly, then pull it away quickly.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe the drain plug and the area around the drain hole.
- Remove and replace the old engine oil drain plug gasket.
- Keep your hand above the oil stream.
Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the plug is going in crooked and can damage the oil pan.
- Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
- Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean with clean shop towels so leaks are easier to spot later.
Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter
- Move the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
- Use the oil filter wrench 74mm 14-flute with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter.
- Spin the filter off by hand once loose.
- Keep the open end of the filter facing upward as much as possible to reduce spills.
- Make sure the old rubber filter gasket came off with the filter. A stuck gasket can cause a major oil leak.
Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter
- Dip a gloved finger into clean new oil and lightly coat the rubber gasket on the new engine oil filter.
- Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the engine.
- Tighten the filter by hand an additional 3/4 turn after the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
- If using the oil filter wrench 74mm 14-flute, tighten gently only enough to seat it. Do not crush or overtighten the filter.
- Hand tight is usually enough.
Step 8: Add New Engine Oil
- Place the funnel into the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
- Pour in about 5.0 quarts of engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic or synthetic blend.
- Wait one minute, then check the dipstick by hand.
- Add oil slowly until the level reaches the full mark. Final capacity with filter is approximately 5.7 quarts.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
Step 9: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Use safety glasses and look under the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Shut the engine off if you see active dripping.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe any spilled oil from nearby surfaces.
Step 10: Lower the Vehicle and Final Check
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Escape fully to the ground.
- Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick by hand again.
- Add oil through the funnel if needed, keeping the level at the full mark but not above it.
Step 11: Reset the Oil Life Monitor
- Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Use the steering wheel controls to open Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.
- Press and hold OK until the display shows the oil life has reset to 100%.
- If your cluster does not show that path, press both the accelerator and brake pedals fully at the same time with the ignition ON, hold for about 20-25 seconds, and wait for the reset confirmation message.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Drive your Escape for 5-10 minutes, then park on level ground and recheck the oil level after 5 minutes.
- ✅ Look under the engine again for any fresh oil drips.
- ✅ Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used oil.
- ✅ Write down the mileage and date so you know when the next oil change is due.
