🔧 Escape - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills your Escape with fresh oil. Clean oil protects the turbocharged 1.6L engine and helps prevent wear, sludge, and turbo damage.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool until it is warm, not hot. Hot oil can burn skin.
- ⚠️ Support your Escape with jack stands if lifting it. Never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off the serpentine belt, exhaust, and electrical connectors.
- ⚠️ Used oil is hazardous. Collect it in a drain pan and recycle it properly.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this oil change.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil 5W-20 synthetic blend or full synthetic - Qty: 4.3 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Engine oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Escape on level ground.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
- If lifting the front, use a floor jack and support both sides with jack stands.
- A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and Secure the Front
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the front of your Escape only high enough to work safely.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and give the vehicle a light shake to confirm it is stable.
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Never trust the jack alone.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Shield
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver and plastic trim clip removal tool to remove the lower shield fasteners if equipped.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same locations.
- A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool that removes plastic clips without breaking them.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
- Slide the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug.
- Make sure the pan is slightly behind the plug because oil may shoot outward at first.
- Use shop towels nearby for spills.
Step 4: Drain the Engine Oil
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
- Finish removing the plug by hand while pressing inward slightly so oil does not splash until the last thread.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
- Inspect the drain plug threads and replace the engine oil drain plug gasket.
- Keep your hand above the oil stream.
Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Wipe the drain plug area clean with shop towels.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
- Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter
- Move the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
- Use an oil filter wrench sized for spin-on filter to loosen the oil filter.
- Spin the filter off by hand once loose.
- Make sure the old rubber filter gasket came off with the old filter.
- A stuck gasket will cause a major leak.
Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter
- Use a clean gloved finger to lightly coat the new oil filter gasket with fresh 5W-20 oil.
- Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
- Tighten the filter by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
- If using the oil filter wrench sized for spin-on filter, use it only gently. Do not crush the filter.
- Torque to 16 Nm (12 ft-lbs) if using a filter torque tool.
Step 8: Refill the Engine Oil
- Place the funnel into the engine oil fill opening.
- Add about 4.0 quarts of engine oil 5W-20 synthetic blend or full synthetic.
- Wait 1 minute, then check the dipstick with shop towels.
- Add oil slowly until the level is near the full mark.
- The total refill is approximately 4.3 quarts with filter.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
Step 9: Start and Leak Check
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Use safety glasses and look under the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes so oil drains back to the pan.
- Check the dipstick again with shop towels and top off using the funnel if needed.
Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Engine Shield
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver and plastic trim clip removal tool to reinstall the lower engine shield fasteners if equipped.
- Make sure the shield is secure and not hanging near the exhaust or moving parts.
Step 11: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Escape slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 12: Reset the Oil Life Monitor
- Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Use the steering wheel controls to open Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset if equipped.
- Press and hold OK until the display confirms the oil life reset.
- If your Escape shows the pedal-style reset instead, turn ignition ON and fully press the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time for about 20 seconds until the reset message appears.
- Turn the ignition OFF, then start the engine and confirm the oil life warning is gone.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check the oil level again after your first short drive.
- ✅ Look under your Escape for any oil drips after it sits for 10-15 minutes.
- ✅ Recycle the used oil and old filter at an auto parts store or approved recycling center.
- ✅ Write down the mileage and date of the oil change.
- ✅ For severe driving, short trips, heat, dust, or stop-and-go traffic, shorten the oil change interval.
