This job replaces the used engine oil and oil filter so your Edge’s turbocharged 2.0L engine stays properly lubricated and protected. You’ll drain the old oil, replace the filter, install new oil, then verify the level and reset the oil life monitor.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Edge on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• Run the engine for 2-3 minutes if it is completely cold, then shut it off. Warm oil drains more easily.
• Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
• Have the new oil filter and new oil ready before draining the old oil.
• Oil life reset will be done from the instrument cluster menu after the oil change.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front of the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack, rated 3-ton minimum at the proper front lifting point to raise the front of your Edge.
• Place jack stands, rated 3-ton minimum under the front support points.
• Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
• Give the vehicle a light push from the side to confirm it is stable before crawling underneath.
• Never work under a jack-only vehicle.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Shield

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic retainers from the lower engine shield.
• If equipped with small fasteners, use the correct socket from your set; most under-shield hardware on this Edge is removed with common small sockets or push clips.
• Lower the shield and set it aside.

Step 3: Position the Drain Pan

• Slide the drain pan, 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug.
• Make sure the pan is slightly behind the plug because oil may shoot outward at first.
• Use shop towels nearby for spills.

Step 4: Drain the Engine Oil

• Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
• Finish removing the plug by hand while keeping inward pressure on it until the last thread releases.
• Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
• Inspect the drain plug and replace the engine oil drain plug washer or seal if separate from the plug.
• Do not drop the plug into the pan.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Wipe the drain plug and drain hole area clean using shop towels.
• Thread the drain plug in by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by forcing the bolt in crooked.
• Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter

• Move the drain pan, 8-quart minimum under the oil filter area.
• Use the oil filter wrench, cap-style or strap-style to loosen the oil filter.
• Spin the oil filter off by hand once loose.
• Keep the open end of the filter facing upward as much as possible to reduce spills.
• Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter. The gasket is the black rubber sealing ring.
• Double gaskets cause major oil leaks.

Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter

• Dip a gloved finger into fresh oil and lightly coat the new oil filter gasket.
• Thread the new engine oil filter onto the filter mount by hand.
• Tighten the filter by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten about another 3/4 turn.
• If using the oil filter wrench, cap-style or strap-style, use only light pressure.
• Torque to 16 Nm (12 ft-lbs) if the filter or service tool allows accurate torque measurement.
• Hand-tight is usually enough for spin-on filters.

Step 8: Reinstall the Lower Engine Shield

• Lift the lower engine shield back into place by hand.
• Use the flat-blade screwdriver or trim clip removal tool to reinstall the plastic retainers.
• Make sure the shield sits flat and is not hanging loose.

Step 9: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack, rated 3-ton minimum to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands, rated 3-ton minimum.
• Slowly lower your Edge to the ground using the floor jack.
• Keep the vehicle level before filling the oil.

Step 10: Add New Engine Oil

• Place the funnel in the oil filler opening.
• Add about 5.3 quarts of engine oil, SAE 5W-30 full synthetic first.
• Reinstall the oil filler cap.
• Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds while watching for oil pressure warning lights.
• Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back into the pan.

Step 11: Check and Correct the Oil Level

• Pull the dipstick and wipe it clean using shop towels.
• Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it again to read the level.
• Add oil through the funnel in small amounts until the level reaches the full mark.
• Total refill is typically about 5.7 quarts with filter.
• Do not overfill. Too much oil can foam and reduce lubrication.

Step 12: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

• Sit in the driver seat and turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
• Use the steering wheel arrow buttons to open the instrument cluster menu.
• Select Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.
• Press and hold OK until the display confirms the oil life reset.
• If your display layout is different, use Settings > Convenience > Oil Life Reset, then press and hold OK.

✅ After Repair

• Start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute.
• Look underneath with a flashlight and check for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
• Shut the engine off, wait 5 minutes, then recheck the dipstick level.
• Top off only if needed using the funnel.
• Pour used oil from the drain pan into a sealed container and recycle it at an auto parts store or oil recycling center.
• Check the oil level again after your next short drive.
