📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Odyssey on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Wheel chocks are wedge-shaped blocks that stop the vehicle from rolling.
• Run the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster than cold oil.
• Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
• If raising the front, lift only at proper front jacking points and support the van with jack stands.
• Keep the old oil filter upright after removal to avoid spilling used oil.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Odyssey high enough to access the oil drain plug and filter.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front support points.
• Gently lower the van onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
• Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before going underneath.
• Give the van a gentle stability shake.

Step 2: Position the Drain Pan

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Place the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the engine oil drain plug.
• The drain plug is at the bottom of the engine oil pan.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Drain Plug

• Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug counterclockwise.
• Finish removing the plug by hand while keeping pressure inward, then pull it away quickly.
• Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
• Use shop towels to wipe oil from the area around the drain hole.
• Keep your hand out of the oil stream.

Step 4: Replace the Drain Plug Washer

• Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug by hand.
• Install the new oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
• A crush washer is a soft sealing washer that compresses when tightened to prevent leaks.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Thread the drain plug into the oil pan by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
• Wipe the drain plug area clean with shop towels.

Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter

• Move the oil drain pan 8-quart minimum under the oil filter.
• Use the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the oil filter counterclockwise.
• Once loose, spin the oil filter off by hand.
• Keep the open end upward as you remove it to reduce spills.
• Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter. The gasket is the rubber sealing ring on the filter.
• Two gaskets can cause a major leak.

Step 7: Prepare the New Oil Filter

• Dip a gloved finger into fresh 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil.
• Lightly coat the rubber gasket on the new engine oil filter.
• This helps the gasket seal correctly and makes the next oil change easier.

Step 8: Install the New Oil Filter

• Thread the new oil filter onto the engine by hand.
• Tighten it until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
• Then tighten it by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
• If using the oil filter wrench 65mm 14-flute for final tightening, use very light force only.
• Do not overtighten the filter.

Step 9: Refill the Engine Oil

• Lower your Odyssey to level ground using the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum after removing the jack stands.
• Place the funnel into the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
• Add about 5.3 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil first.
• Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
• Wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick level with a shop towel.
• Add oil slowly until the level reaches the upper mark on the dipstick.
• Total refill is approximately 5.7 quarts with filter change.

Step 10: Start and Leak Check

• Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
• Turn the engine off.
• Use safety glasses and look under the engine for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
• Use shop towels to wipe any spilled oil so fresh leaks are easy to spot.

Step 11: Final Oil Level Check

• Wait 3-5 minutes after shutting the engine off.
• Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with a shop towel, reinstall it fully, then pull it again.
• Add small amounts of 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil through the funnel if needed.
• Do not overfill above the upper dipstick mark.

Step 12: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

• Use the steering wheel buttons and center display controls.
• Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine, or start the engine if needed for the display.
• Use the display controls to select Settings > Vehicle Settings > Maintenance Info.
• Select Reset Items.
• Select Engine Oil Life.
• Choose Reset, then confirm.
• The oil life should show 100%.

• ✅ Let the engine idle for one more minute and confirm the oil pressure warning light is off.
• ✅ Recheck the drain plug and oil filter area for leaks after the short idle.
• ✅ Take a short 5-minute drive, park on level ground, wait 5 minutes, and check the dipstick again.
• ✅ Recycle the used oil and old oil filter at an approved recycling center or parts store.
• ✅ Write down the mileage and date of the oil change.
