📋 Before You Begin

• 🚗 Park your Tucson on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
• 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
• 🌡️ Run the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster, but it should not be hot enough to burn you.
• 📘 Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. This helps the oil drain smoothly.
• 🛢️ Have the drain pan ready before removing the drain plug.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and Support the Front

• Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so your Tucson cannot roll.
• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point to raise the front of the vehicle.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points, then slowly lower the vehicle onto the stands.
• Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before getting underneath.
• Stability check first, always.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover if Equipped

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips from the lower engine cover.
• A trim clip removal tool is a small fork-shaped tool that lifts plastic clips without breaking them.
• Lower the cover and set it aside where you will not step on it.

Step 3: Drain the Old Engine Oil

• Slide the oil drain pan 8-quart capacity under the engine oil pan drain plug.
• Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
• Finish removing the drain plug by hand while keeping pressure inward until the threads are free, then pull it away quickly.
• Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
• Use shop towels to wipe oil from around the drain hole.
• Keep your hand out of the oil stream.

Step 4: Replace the Drain Plug Washer and Reinstall the Plug

• Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug by hand.
• A crush washer is a soft sealing washer that deforms once to prevent leaks.
• Install the new engine oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
• Thread the drain plug into the oil pan by hand first. This prevents cross-threading.
• Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the Old Oil Filter

• Move the oil drain pan 8-quart capacity under the oil filter area.
• Use the oil filter wrench sized for spin-on filter to loosen the oil filter counterclockwise.
• A spin-on oil filter is the metal can-style filter that screws directly onto the engine.
• Once loose, unscrew the filter by hand and keep the open end facing upward to reduce spilling.
• Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter. If it stuck to the engine, remove it by hand.
• Double gaskets cause major leaks.

Step 6: Install the New Oil Filter

• Dip a gloved finger in clean engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic and lightly coat the rubber gasket on the new spin-on engine oil filter.
• Thread the new oil filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
• Tighten the oil filter by hand an additional 3/4 turn after gasket contact.
• If using a 3/8-inch torque wrench with a compatible filter cup, tighten the filter to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
• Wipe the area with shop towels so new leaks will be easy to spot.

Step 7: Reinstall the Lower Engine Cover

• Raise the lower engine cover into position by hand.
• Use the trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to reinstall the plastic clips.
• Make sure the cover is secure and not hanging loose.

Step 8: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Slowly lower your Tucson to the ground with the floor jack.

Step 9: Add New Engine Oil

• Place the funnel into the oil filler opening on top of the engine.
• Pour in about 4.5 quarts of engine oil 5W-20 full synthetic.
• Reinstall the oil filler cap by hand.
• Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds, then shut it off.
• Wait 3-5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.
• Use a shop towel to wipe the dipstick, reinsert it fully, then pull it out again to check the level.
• Add oil slowly with the funnel until the level reaches the full mark. Total capacity with filter is approximately 5.1 quarts.
• Add slowly. Overfilled oil can damage parts.

Step 10: Reset the Oil Service Reminder

• Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine, or press the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal.
• Use the steering wheel buttons to open User Settings > Service Interval on the instrument cluster.
• Select Reset, then confirm the reset if prompted.
• If the menu is not visible, check that User Settings > Service Interval > Enable Service Interval is turned on.

• ✅ Start the engine and check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
• ✅ Shut the engine off, wait 3-5 minutes, then recheck the dipstick level.
• ✅ Top off only as needed. Keep the oil level near the full mark, not above it.
• ✅ Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or parts store oil recycling location.
• ✅ After your first short drive, park on level ground and check one more time for leaks.
