🔧 Optima - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
Changing the oil removes contaminants and protects your Optima’s 2.4L engine from internal wear. Replace the filter at the same time, then verify the final oil level with the dipstick.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on level, solid ground and keep the transmission in Park.
- Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack. Always use jack stands at the specified front support points.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves because used oil may be hot.
- Let a hot engine cool for 20-30 minutes before removing the drain plug.
- Keep used engine oil away from children, pets, drains, and soil.
- Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Full-synthetic engine oil (SAE 5W-20, API SP) - Qty: 6 US quarts
- Spin-on engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain-plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Optima on level pavement, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the engine.
- Run the engine for approximately three minutes if it is completely cold. Slightly warm oil drains more easily, but it should not be hot.
- Open the hood and remove the engine-oil filler cap by turning it counterclockwise.
- Place wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
- No infotainment service mode, scan tool, or battery procedure is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front
- Position the floor jack beneath the reinforced front-center lifting point on the front subframe.
- Raise your Optima high enough to access the engine splash shield.
- Place the jack stands beneath the reinforced left and right front support points. A jack stand is a fixed support that safely holds the vehicle after lifting.
- Lower the vehicle slowly onto both stands and gently push the body to verify that it is stable.
Step 2: Open the lower service area
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
- Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove any bolts covering the oil-drain and filter service openings.
- Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool for any push clips that must be removed.
- Keep the fasteners organized so each one returns to its original location.
Step 3: Drain the old engine oil
- Position the 7-quart drain pan beneath the oil-pan drain plug. Allow room for the oil stream to travel outward initially.
- Use the 17mm socket and ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
- Finish removing the plug by hand while pressing it lightly toward the oil pan. Pull it away quickly when the threads release.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip, usually 5-10 minutes.
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and wipe the plug with an absorbent shop towel.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Fit one new crush washer onto the cleaned drain plug.
- Thread the plug clockwise by hand until it seats. If it does not turn easily, back it out and start again to avoid damaged threads.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 35-45 Nm (26-33 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the drain-plug area clean with an absorbent shop towel.
Step 5: Remove the old oil filter
- Move the drain pan beneath the spin-on oil filter.
- Use the adjustable oil filter wrench to turn the filter counterclockwise until loose. A spin-on filter is the metal canister that threads directly onto the engine.
- Finish unscrewing the filter by hand and tip it into the drain pan.
- Check the engine’s filter mounting surface. Make certain the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.
- Two stacked gaskets can cause a major leak.
Step 6: Install the new oil filter
- Apply a thin film of fresh 5W-20 oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved fingertip.
- Thread the filter clockwise onto the mounting stud by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
- Tighten the filter by hand approximately three-quarters of a turn after gasket contact.
- If checking with the torque wrench and adjustable oil filter wrench, tighten to Torque to 12-16 Nm (9-12 ft-lbs). Do not exceed this range.
Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield
- Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the reusable push clips.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the splash-shield bolts snugly. Do not overtighten fasteners installed in plastic.
- Remove the oil drain pan and all tools from beneath the vehicle.
Step 8: Lower the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to raise your Optima slightly above the jack stands.
- Remove both jack stands, then lower the vehicle slowly to level ground.
- Keep the wheel chocks installed until the repair is complete.
Step 9: Add fresh engine oil
- Place the automotive funnel in the engine-oil filler opening.
- Pour in approximately 4.8 US quarts of SAE 5W-20 oil, then wait one minute.
- Remove the funnel and reinstall the filler cap by hand.
- Pull out the dipstick, wipe it with an absorbent shop towel, fully reinsert it, and pull it out again.
- Add oil gradually through the funnel until the level approaches the upper dipstick mark. The expected total refill with a new filter is approximately 5.1 US quarts (4.8 litres).
- Do not fill above the upper mark.
Step 10: Start the engine and inspect
- Start the engine and confirm that the red oil-pressure warning light switches off within a few seconds.
- Switch off the engine immediately if the warning light remains illuminated.
- Let the engine idle for approximately 30 seconds while checking beneath the vehicle for leakage.
- Switch off the engine and wait five minutes.
- Use an absorbent shop towel to check the dipstick again. Add small amounts through the automotive funnel until the oil reaches the upper mark without exceeding it.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm that the filler cap and dipstick are fully seated.
- Inspect the drain plug and oil-filter areas again after a short drive.
- To reset the service reminder, switch the ignition on and use the steering-wheel controls to select User Settings > Service Interval > Reset. If shown, press and hold the OK button to confirm.
- Pour the used oil into sealed containers using the automotive funnel. Take it and the old filter to an authorized recycling or service facility.
- Check the dipstick level again the following morning while parked on level ground.
